When Did Traveling Not Become a Foul?

Jake MooersMay 21, 2008

Ok, so this week its officiating.

What is that?

I seem to not see any "good" officiating anymore. Granted, I've been stuck in the house watching basketball and watching LeBron, Kobe, Ginioblii, and various others get away with traveling, which should be the easiest call there is, but it takes away my passion for a good game.

If I'm sitting there watching all these players run to the hoop taking three or four steps as they have the ball in there hand, I'll shut it off.

Now I'm not just singling out basketball officials by any means, I'm just saying, they let some things go that officials in other sports wouldn't.

Now, personally, I think football has the best officiating...sometimes.

Really, can you say who has the best officiating? The best officiating happens when the refs are throwing the calls in favor of your team.

I love a call that will go against whoever the Celtics or the Red Sox are playing. And I'm sure the next guy loves the officiating of his favorite teams.

Honestly, truthfully, I do think football has the best officiating. They have so many calls to make, and they have 22 large men to look at. Plus the sidelines.

Baseball has got to be one of the easiest, but its all on judgement. You must be good at making the right call. Balls or strikes. Tag or safe. Home run or foul. This past week, the third base umpire for the Yankees and Mets blew a home run call.

How could you possibly see that? It was such a closely hit ball, and I wouldn't have been able to see it.

That's where REPLAY comes into play for baseball.

They need it bad. For home runs and tags. I don't think they should use it for strikeouts though. They cant take EVERYTHING away from the umps.

In football, we all have seen the hail mary. As they're fighting for the ball, there is some pushing and shoving for that ball, but sometimes the officials just let it go.

Sometimes, that could be a game changer. Back in 2002, the conclusion of the Fiesta Bowl had Miami overcoming the Buckeyes of Ohio after Ohio State went four and out. But at the last second, the ref called pass interference on the D, and it changed the game outcome, and possibly changed the future of both schools.

Since then, Miami has declined, and Ohio State has made it to two straight National Title games.

Officiating affects more than just the outcome of the game...

I believe it affects recruiting for colleges, attendance, morals, and feelings towards a team.

In college, young talent want to go to the winning team. Players want to go where they're going to be seen and heard, and making a run for the title.

Nobody wants to go see there team lose because of bad officiating. Walking out on a field, knowing the ref or ump has made bad calls in the past just ruins things when it comes down to the wire.

To sum it all up, everyone will flip flop on this issue. You don't like it because they made the wrong call for your team, but you'll like it if  they call it in your favor.
