Akeem King to Atlanta Falcons: Full Draft-Pick Breakdown
When the Atlanta Falcons signed Dan Quinn to be their head coach, head-scratchers like Akeem King being drafted in the seventh round were going to happen. The Falcons have a unique profile for every player at every position, and King fits the profile for cornerback.
The position itself might be a bit log-jammed with Desmond Trufant, Robert Alford, second-round pick Jalen Collins, Ricardo Allen and Phillip Adams already all at the position, but Atlanta having a ton of talent at the cornerback position is nothing but a good thing.

On the field
The Falcons apparently consider King to be a cornerback and not a safety. That makes perfect sense for his fit too. He's a raw athlete, but he's almost the same physical profile that Collins and almost any other Seahawks cornerback had.
The Falcons are going to emulate the attempts to build depth with seventh-round picks within the secondary by taking guys like King that late. King is raw and only has one year starting, so he's a malleable ball of clay for the Falcons to work with within the scheme.
He's quick and breaks on the ball well. He is physical and likes to press and attack receivers in man coverage. But the lack of experience hurts him. Atlanta will likely have to work with him on special teams for the majority of his first few years in the NFL before he develops into a nickel-caliber corner.
Off the Field
Despite originally being recruited as a wide receiver, King moved to safety and cornerback for the good of the Spartans. Atlanta loves players who are willing to do whatever it takes to help the team. King didn't have a lot of experience on the field in high school either.
He was mainly a track athlete who didn't pick up football until midway through high school and relied on his ridiculous speed to get by. He does sound like a hard worker when he was profiled in this article from his high school days by Donvan Aird of The Tribune.
Why Akeem King instead of Kevin White or Cody Prewitt?
The Falcons took King over a combination of players who could have been good fits within the Falcons defense. However, Kevin White out of Texas Christian and Cody Prewitt weren't selected by the Falcons. Prewitt would have been a safety for the Falcons, while White would have been a corner.
The problem with White is that he's just not big enough to fit the profile for the big, physical cornerback that the Falcons want. Sure, he's good at playing the ball, but the athletic profile just isn't there for White when it comes to a scheme fit for the Falcons.
With Prewitt, he's a better fit for the safety position. However, he's a true strong safety, and the Falcons are essentially set there. If he were a free safety, he could have made sense. Atlanta made the right choice for their scheme fit, though, with King.
