Randy Orton Remaining in WWE Title Hunt After Extreme Rules Is the Right Call

Sebastian MaldonadoApr 30, 2015

Randy Orton may have lost to Seth Rollins at Extreme Rules, but he still is in the WWE title picture.

Even though Orton got his title shot at Extreme Rules against Rollins on Sunday, it placed him at a disadvantage.

His RKO finishing maneuver was banned throughout the match, despite it being set inside a steel cage. Orton still had Rollins all to himself, or so he thought.

Kane stayed at ringside as the special enforcer. Jamie Noble and Joey Mercury (J&J Security) tried to interfere. Unfortunately, their presence made Kane very angry.

Kane gave chokeslams to J&J Security, Orton and Rollins in that order. Orton returned the favor by hitting Kane with the RKO. Rollins took advantage of Kane's distraction and hit Orton with an RKO of his own. Rollins then crawled through the door to make his escape and thus is still our WWE world heavyweight champion.

In the following Raw, Kane created a WWE App for fans to vote for who Rollins would face next: Orton, Roman Reigns or both. Fans decided that Rollins will fight both Reigns and Orton in a Triple Threat match at WWE Payback.

Orton is back in the WWE title picture, which is the right move.

WWE Creative made the right call by keeping Orton in the title picture, for now. There are plenty of reasons that don't involve Orton's in-ring ability and main event draw.

For starters, the WWE title picture is lacking in contenders. Many former champions are squandered in the midcard division.

Former champions Sheamus and Dolph Ziggler are embroiled in their own intense feud. John Cena, the United States champion, is still trying to turn back the threat of Rusev.

Daniel Bryan, the current Intercontinental champion, has his own title to worry about. Former world champion Brock Lesnar is still suspended and isn't expected to return anytime soon.

Additionally, the tease of a Kane vs. Rollins feud isn't exciting. With all due respect, Kane is very limited in the ring, and he's not the same demonic monster he used to be. More importantly, do fans still care enough for him to become champion again?

This leaves us Reigns. We last saw him getting a title shot at WrestleMania 31 when he took a beating from Lesnar. That took its toll, leaving Rollins to pin Reigns for the WWE title.

Reigns hasn't received a shot ever since. He's been too busy wrapping up a long rivalry with Big Show. Reigns succeeded at Extreme Rules and is now ready to get his shot again.

Why didn't he get a singles match back then? Frankly, he wasn't ready because of his feud with Big Show. This brings us to Orton.

Orton is a ring general at this point in his career. His tenure with WWE has been fighting against some of the best names in the wrestling world. Orton is fluid and adding him as a foil to Rollins was a smart move.

They have the potential to work a great match at Payback. More importantly, he also can teach Reigns.

The Triple Threat match opens new doors for all three parties involved. Orton, though, must play the role of mentor to Reigns and Rollins to teach them about being singles competitors. Both are very skilled, but they can learn in handling the WWE main event picture from a man who's had to battle Triple H in his first full year on the WWE roster.

Expect a great Triple Threat match come Payback on May 17. And, with no holds barred, Orton will make WWE fans happy come game day.
