Wilkerson Comments on Minicamp Return, Contract Negotiations
Tuesday, June 9
Wilkerson is in attendance at the Jets' mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, according to Kristian Dyer of Metro.
"I'm very confident that hopefully a long-term deal will get done with Jets," Wilkerson said, according to Kimberly A. Martin of Newsday. Wilkerson told reporters he was "frustrated" with his contract situation, according to Dennis Waszak Jr. of the Associated Press. "If I have to play under my current contract then so be it," he continued, according to Dyer.
When asked whether he plans on holding out through training camp, Wilkerson declined comment, according to Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media. "Wilkerson said he views himself as that type of player but said you have to ask the Jets front office 'if they feel the same way,'" when asked if he saw himself as worth a long-term deal, Martin reported.
He told reporters it "felt good" to be in the building, according to Eric Allen of the Jets' official site.
Wilkerson's agent, Chad Wiestling, also released a statement on negotiations, according to Waszak Jr.:
On June 3, Steve Serby and Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post provided comments from Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan regarding potential negotiations with Wilkerson for a new contract:
"“It’s going to be a process,” Maccagnan said at WFAN’s charity softball benefit for the NYPD at Yankee Stadium. “We’re just going to see. I don’t really want to put a timeline on anything. I’m just going to see how this plays out in the near future.
“I would hope (to get an extension done)” he added, “ at some point in time.”
Maccagnan admitted (Cameron) Jordan’s deal “reset the market” for defensive linemen drafted in 2011 not named J.J Watt, but that appears to be a market the Jets are reluctant to enter — especially considering how stocked they are in the defensive interior.
“Each player is kind of different in how you slot or grade them,” Maccagnan said when asked if Wilkerson could expect a deal similar to Jordan’s if the Jets extended him.
"
Wilkerson's status with the team has been the subject of much debate this offseason. While he has expressed a desire for a new contract, the team has received numerous offers for his services, according to a previous report from ESPN's Adam Schefter on April 28. But the Jets rebuffed those offers, according to NFL insider Jay Glazer (h/t Fox Sports' Mike Garafolo).
The Jets drafted Wilkerson 30th overall in 2011. In four seasons, the 25-year-old has recorded 24.5 sacks and 14 passes defended in 61 games and was a second-team All-Pro in 2013. He's set to make $6.97 million this season, according to Spotrac.
Wilkerson is one of the top defensive linemen in New York, and the Jets are going to need his skill set to find success this season.
