Calling True or False on 5 Recent Chelsea Transfer Rumours

Garry HayesApr 5, 2015

Now that the Premier League season is reaching it's climax, focus is turning to the summer and who will arrive at or depart many of the division's leading clubs.

Close to sealing their first league title since 2010, Chelsea are among the teams in the headlines, with big names being linked.

Some of these rumours will gather momentum over the coming weeks, but others will disappear before the ink has barely dried on the papers that printed them.

From the realistic to the fanciful, Bleacher Report calls true or false on some of the most recent transfer rumours surrounding Chelsea.

False: Emmanuel Adebayor

1 of 5

Let's get the big one out of the way first.

According to the Express, Chelsea will be offering Emmanuel Adebayor £100,000 per week to play for them next season.

That's despite the Tottenham Hotspur striker achieving little in the last two seasons at White Hart Lane and failing to score since October 26, when he netted in a 2-1 defeat against Newcastle United.

He's a peripheral figure at a club that has an outside chance of making the top four this season, and he is regarded by some as a player who creates unrest in the dressing room.

Chelsea have made a point of ending the days whereby the club overpays big-name football players, but it still doesn't stop them being linked with those of Adebayor's ilk.

Regardless of whether Didier Drogba retires at the end of 2014/15, this is one deal that will not be happening.

Surely.

True: Theo Walcott

Chelsea need to add more width to their game.

Jose Mourinho already has an abundance of No. 10s to choose from, so when he dips his toes into the transfer market this summer, we can expect at least one more winger to be added to his squad.

Theo Walcott is agile, can score goals and, above all else, is lightening quick, so he would add extra dynamism to the Blues on the counter-attack.

What's more, Walcott is entering the final year of his contract, and The Times reports that Chelsea are looking to test Arsenal's resolve for a player they signed in 2006.

With Petr Cech potentially being used as a bargaining tool, this is one rumour that has a bit of weight behind it.

False: Mauro Icardi

If Loic Remy wasn't proving such a reliable second-choice striker, there could be grounds for Chelsea to be looking elsewhere to strengthen their attacking ranks this summer.

The fact remains, though, that Remy is the ideal back-up for Diego Costa and is a player more than capable of featuring in the biggest matches for Chelsea when required.

Should Didier Drogba retire, Jose Mourinho will need an extra frontman but not one of Mauro Icardi's profile.

To begin with the Argentinian comes with enough of an ego to suggest he would not settle for being Costa's back-up—or Remy's for that matter.

When he's first choice at Inter Milan, why should he?

Icardi's enjoyed a fruitful spell in Serie A, but it doesn't mean he is better equipped to flourish at Chelsea than the players they already have.

Chelsea will be looking for a third-choice striker, which Icardi isn't.

The 22-year-old has made no secret of his desire for an improved contract at the San Siro, and the recent rumours in Metro have more than an element of the player using Chelsea's name to get the deal he wants.

True: Petr Cech

4 of 5

After his career with Chelsea, it's a shame Petr Cech has had to spend a season warming the bench.

Players of his ilk deserve better than that.

Of course, with Chelsea building for the future, Cech's age meant he wasn't going to be part of that—Thibaut Courtois will.

And as we hear often, the future starts now and it's why Cech finds himself in the position he is in.

Cech is almost certain to leave Chelsea this summer, with his destination widely tipped to be either Arsenal (The Telegraph), Real Madrid (the Mirror) or Liverpool (The Independent).

He has his pick of clubs, and now is the time for him to decide.

True: Jose Luis Gaya

5 of 5

Chelsea are in the business of signing the best young players, and Jose Luis Gaya certainly fits the bill.

The Valencia left-back is widely regarded as one of the best young talents in his position, and with the left side of defence still a problem area for Jose Mourinho, this is a move that makes sense.

Metro recently suggested Chelsea will make a move for him this summer.

Filipe Luis hasn't fully settled into English football, while Cesar Azpilicueta—a right-back—continues to deputise on the left.

In the short term, that works for Mourinho. Azpilicueta has been solid in that position, but it does limit Chelsea going forward at times, and the manager will want to address that.

In Gaya, he may well have the player to remedy his left-back problems.
