Ryan Fitzpatrick to Jets: Latest Trade Details, Comments and Reaction

Mike ChiariMar 11, 2015

The Houston Texans took a step toward cleaning up their cluttered quarterback situation Wednesday as they traded veteran signal-caller Ryan Fitzpatrick to the New York Jets.

Houston confirmed the deal on Twitter, noting the return is an undisclosed draft pick.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Texans will receive a conditional late-round pick in exchange for the Harvard product.

The 32-year-old gunslinger confirmed the deal, per Mark Berman of Fox 26 in Houston:

Brian T. Smith of The Houston Chronicle is reporting that the Jets are giving up a future seventh-round selection that could become a sixth if certain conditions are met.

Houston recently signed Brian Hoyer and re-signed Ryan Mallett, which created a logjam under center. The Jets, on the other hand, needed to bring in some competition for incumbent starter Geno Smith.

As pointed out by the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta, the appropriately nicknamed Amish Rifle comes at a fairly low price as well:

While Smith may be the slight favorite to earn the starting job since he has been in New York for a couple of years already, Mike Clay of Pro Football Focus expects Fitz to win the gig under a new coaching staff:

The new regime is significant because Fitzpatrick has experience playing under offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, per Joe Buscaglia of WGR 550 in Buffalo, New York:

Fitz was the Bills' starter during Gailey's tenure in Buffalo, and he had some success to the tune of over 3,800 yards and 24 touchdowns in 2011.

Fitzpatrick also played pretty well for the Texans last season, as he threw 17 touchdowns to just eight interceptions in 12 starts.

He may not be anywhere near an elite starter, but Fitzpatrick has proven capable of holding down the fort, especially with Gailey at the controls.

Because of that and the lack of assets given up in the deal, it is difficult to argue against New York's decision to bring him in.
