Spring Training Predictions for All 30 MLB Teams' Final 25-Man Roster

Joel ReuterMar 12, 2015

Two weeks into MLB spring training, most teams are still carrying bloated rosters as they try to get a look at as many players as possible before trimming down the roster.

That makes it somewhat tricky to accurately predict exactly who will be on each team's Opening Day roster, but what follows is my best attempt at doing just that.

It's important to remember that the inevitable injuries, surprise performances and whatever signings and trades take place this spring will shake things up between now and the beginning of the regular season.

That said, chances are many of these roster predictions will wind up being inaccurate. What they do provide, though, is an overview of how each team's roster currently stacks up midway through the spring.

Included along with the 25-man roster predictions is a look at each team's top roster battle to watch this spring.

Note: Players listed in italics are not currently on the 40-man roster and are in camp trying to make the team as non-roster invitees. Players with an (R) following their name have their rookie status intact entering the season, according to Baseball-Reference.

The Arizona Diamondbacks may be lacking a bona fide staff ace, but they are loaded with starting pitching depth and have some decisions to make about who fills the final three spots in their rotation.

Chase Anderson showed enough as a rookie last year, going 9-7 with a 4.01 ERA in 21 starts, that he's probably a safe bet to win one of those spots.

From there, Vidal Nuno, Allen Webster, Rubby De La Rosa, Trevor Cahill and prospects Archie Bradley and Robbie Ross will all get an extended look the remainder of the spring.

Already with one rotation spot to fill, the Atlanta Braves will now need to decide on two starters to round out the rotation after the news that Mike Minor will start the season on the disabled list while recovering from rotator cuff inflammation.

Hard-throwing Mike Foltynewicz and fellow prospects Manny Banuelos and Cody Martin will look to hold off non-roster invitees Eric Stults and Wandy Rodriguez.

Stults has topped 175 innings in each of the past two seasons while pitching for the San Diego Padres, and he closed out the 2014 season very well, with a 2.74 ERA in 11 starts over the final two months.

Caleb Joseph, Everth Cabrera and Delmon Young figure to be locked into bench spots, but from there the Baltimore Orioles have some decisions to make about who rounds out their bench. If they opt to go with another outfielder, David Lough provides a plus glove and a left-handed bat. He is also out of options, so he'll either be on the roster or likely playing elsewhere in 2015.

The versatile Ryan Flaherty is the other leading candidate to round out of the bench, and he has seen semi-regular playing time the past three seasons at a number of different positions.

Utility man Jimmy Paredes, catcher Steve Clevenger and outfielder Nolan Reimold are also in the mix for roster spots. There is an outside chance the team could opt to go with five bench players instead of four.

The health of Rusney Castillo could help the Boston Red Sox decide on an Opening Day roster should his strained oblique leave him sidelined to start the season.

However, he is already back practicing with the team at this point, so chances are he won't miss much time, if any, once the regular season does roll around. That leaves the team with a decision to make in the outfield.

Castillo and Mookie Betts were competing for the starting center field job, with Daniel Nava out of options and looking to win a spot on the bench. That means once everyone is healthy, either Castillo or Betts will need be demoted to the minors or Nava will be designated for assignment.

The right-handed side of the Chicago Cubs bullpen looks to be set, with Hector Rondon, Pedro Strop, Neil Ramirez, Jason Motte and ousted starter Edwin Jackson more or less locked into roster spots.

The left-handed relief corps is a different story, though, as it will be a pair of former starters in Felix Doubront and Tsuyoshi Wada battling with Zac Rosscup and non-roster invitee Phil Coke.

Coke has the most experience of any of them and Doubront is out of options, so they look like the favorites at this point. Should the team opt to go with only one left-hander, look for Justin Grimm to come away with the final bullpen slot.

Prospects Carlos Sanchez and Micah Johnson will be given every chance to win the job, while utility man Emilio Bonifacio and Leury Garcia are also viable options in big league camp.

Despite not currently being on the 40-man roster, the 24-year-old Johnson has made a strong case in the early going this spring. Through six games, he's gone 7-for-14 with a double, triple, home run and five runs scored.

Donald Lutz is out of options, but he has not shown much offensively during his brief time in the majors. He hit .176/.222/.255 in 51 at-bats last season after a .275/.348/.486 line with 12 home runs in 284 minor league at-bats.

The Cleveland Indians took a chance signing Gavin Floyd to a one-year, $4 million deal after he suffered significant arm injuries the past two seasons in hopes that he would claim a spot in the rotation.

Bad news came Tuesday, though, when it was announced that Floyd had suffered a re-injury of the stress fracture in his arm that ended his 2014 season. At this point, he's out indefinitely.

Despite that loss, the team does have some solid options to round out the rotation, led by left-hander T.J. House. The 25-year-old was 5-3 with a 3.35 ERA in 18 starts last season, including 4-1 with a 2.53 ERA in 10 second-half starts.

Zach McAllister (22 G, 15 GS, 4-7, 5.23 ERA) and Josh Tomlin (25 G, 16 GS, 6-9, 4.76 ERA) are also options for the No. 5 starter job.

If they do stick with the traditional five bench players, the versatile Charlie Culberson is probably the leading candidate at this point. First baseman Ben Paulsen or outfielder Kyle Parker could also be options if the team prefers to go with another power bat.

First Base/Outfield

More than one roster decision for the Houston Astros hinges on whether Jon Singleton opens the season as the everyday first baseman. The 23-year-old hit just .168/.285/.335 over 310 at-bats last year, but he's off to a nice start this spring.

If Singleton does wind up in the minors, that would likely mean Evan Gattis and Chris Carter split time between first base and designated hitter.

That would then open up a starting outfield job for someone from the trio of prospect Jake Marisnick, out-of-options Alex Presley and a red-hot Robbie Grossman (6-for-10, HR), who are all currently competing for the fourth outfield job.

That's a lot to be sorted out, but it all leads back to whether or not Singleton breaks camp with the big league club.

The Los Angeles Angels are still without a proven late-inning lefty to round out their bullpen. They acquired Cesar Ramos from the Tampa Bay Rays in the offseason, but he'll likely serve in more of a swingman/long reliever role this coming season.

So with that in mind, the Angels will need to decide between rounding out the bullpen with a more proven right-handed arm or a less experienced second southpaw. Matt Lindstrom and Cory Rasmus are two righties vying for a spot, but keep an eye on former Chicago White Sox prospect Scott Snodgress as a non-roster invitee from the left side.

That is assuming Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who is also out of options, is locked in as the fourth outfielder. The 27-year-old had an .828 OPS with 14 doubles and three home runs in 112 at-bats last season and has gone 10-for-21 with three doubles so far this spring.

Worley (8-4, 2.85 ERA, 3.44 FIP) and Locke (7-6, 3.91 ERA, 4.37 FIP) were both pleasant surprises last season, and both figure to make the roster in some capacity. It's just a matter of who is starting and who is relegated to the bullpen.

Third Base

The San Diego Padres did well last season to land the versatile Yangervis Solarte from the New York Yankees when they traded Chase Headley, and he entered camp as the front-runner to win the third base job.

While he stands as the best fit to be slotted in the leadoff spot the lineup, he's not the only option at the hot corner. The team also acquired Will Middlebrooks from the Boston Red Sox in one of the better buy-low moves of the offseason.

After a strong rookie campaign, the 26-year-old has hit just .213/.265/.364 over the past two seasons. The big-time power potential is still there, though, and he's off to a hot start this spring at 7-for-13 with a double and two home runs.

Final Bullpen Spot

One of the best bullpens in baseball the past several years, the San Francisco Giants have a decision to make about who rounds out their seven-man relief corps. Long relievers Yusmeiro Petit and Ryan Vogelsong are joined by the dynamic foursome of Javier Lopez, Jeremy Affeldt, Sergio Romo and Santiago Casilla.

Both Jean Machi and George Kontos are out of minor league options, and they will compete with hard-throwing prospect Hunter Strickland for the final spot.

Final Bullpen Spot

The Seattle Mariners had the best bullpen in baseball last season with a 2.59 ERA, and outside of Brandon Maurer and Joe Beimel, all of the key pieces will be returning in 2015.

Deciding who replaces the veteran Beimel as the second left-hander in the pen will be the big decision of the spring, and the Mariners have a handful of options to fill the void.

Rule 5 selection David Rollins has thrown three scoreless innings so far this spring as he looks to win the job over Lucas Luetge, Mike Kickham and non-roster veterans Joe Saunders and Rafael Perez.

No. 5 Starter

The St. Louis Cardinals roster was more or less set heading into spring training, with the only real question being whether Carlos Martinez would prove capable of holding down the No. 5 starter job. The electric 23-year-old made 50 relief appearances and seven starts last season, going 2-1 with a 4.45 ERA and 1.639 WHIP as part of the rotation.

Martinez has allowed three hits and one earned run in 4.2 innings so far this spring.

His biggest competition for the job is left-hander Marco Gonzales, who has been even more impressive this spring, allowing just two hits and zero runs in six innings of work.

Final Bench Spot

The decision on who fills out the Tampa Bay Rays bench will hinge greatly on whether veteran David DeJesus is traded before the start of the season.

DeJesus entered camp knowing there was a possibility he could be moved, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. The 35-year-old hit .248/.344/.403 with a 0.7 WAR last season and is set to earn $5 million this coming season.

If he is moved, prospect Mikie Mahtook or non-roster invitee Corey Brown look like the leading options to take his spot on the roster. Mahtook has more upside, but the 29-year-old Brown is off to a hot start this spring, going 5-for-11 with two doubles, a triple and a home run.

Left Field

After declining their option on Alex Rios, the Texas Rangers opted against signing anyone to fill the void in left field, instead entering camp with a handful of incumbent options and non-roster invitees battling it out for the job.

Jake Smolinski (86 AB, .903 OPS, 3 HR, 12 RBI) and Ryan Rua (105 AB, .740 OPS, 2 HR, 14 RBI) both showed flashes in Texas down the stretch last season. Rua has the added value of being able to play third base on top of the outfield.

Those two will look to hold off non-roster veterans Kyle Blanks, Nate Schierholtz, Rule 5 pick Delino DeShields and former top prospect Michael Choice.

No. 4 and No. 5 Starter

The Toronto Blue Jays already had one rotation spot up for grabs after trading J.A. Happ during the offseason, and they were dealt a blow Tuesday when Marcus Stroman was lost for the season to a torn ACL.

R.A. Dickey, Mark Buehrle and Drew Hutchison are locked into the first three spots in the rotation, but the other two are legitimately wide-open competitions this spring.

Top prospects Daniel Norris and Aaron Sanchez are both in the running, alongside veterans Marco Estrada, Liam Hendriks and Kyle Drabek. Complicating things further, Sanchez is also in the running for the closer's job along with Brett Cecil.

Outfield

The Washington Nationals outfield will eventually consist of Jayson Werth, Denard Span and Bryce Harper left to right, but with Werth and Span both set to begin the year on the disabled list, it will have a different look on Opening Day.

Veteran Nate McLouth is the leading candidate for left field duties, though Kevin Frandsen and Tyler Moore are also in the mix. Moore is off to a great start this spring, going 6-for-13 with four doubles, one home runs and seven RBI.

As for center field, top prospect Michael Taylor is an intriguing short-term solution, as he is expected to take over for Span when he departs next offseason. Non-roster invitee Tony Gwynn Jr. looks like the only other viable option at this point.
