From a statistical standpoint, defensive end Kroy Biermann is coming off what is arguably his best season as a pro. That made him an attractive option for teams looking for a player on the edge in free agency, but the Falcons decided to keep him around, re-signing him Wednesday.ย

Jay Adams of AtlantaFalcons.com confirmed the news.ย Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com reported that the one-year deal was worth $1.925 million. Biermann also received a $500,000 signing bonus.

Biermann, who was featured regularly last summer on HBO's documentary series Hard Knocks along with his wife, reality star Kim Zolciak, and his six kids, accumulated 77 tackles, 4.5 sacks, a forced fumble and eight stuffs in 2014 for the Atlanta Falcons, per ESPN.com. The tackles and stuffs were each career highs.

Still, Biermann was on a Falcons defense that finished last in the NFL in passing defense and tied for 30th in sacks with just 22.

Though the team let go of Mike Smith and added Dan Quinn as the new coach in the offseason, employing a new defensive scheme in the process, Biermann apparently remains a major part of the plans for the new administration.

At the age of 29, Biermann will be hoping the new system put in place helps him build on the strong statistical season he had in 2014. One area in which Biermann will hope to improve his game is in his sack totals, as he's never registered more than five in a season.

The Falcons didn't re-sign Biermann with the belief that he would turn into Justin Houston overnight. After seven seasons, Atlanta knows better. But they will bank on his making a big impact off the edge for them in 2015.
