White Dominates Combine, Leaves Coaches Saying "Wow"

Saturday, Feb. 21

White is working to prove he's the top wideout available in this year's class. Some of the other players in that discussion include Amari Cooper, DeVante Parker, Jaelen Strong and Dorial Green-Beckham. The overall difference between them is small.

White had a spectacular showing at the combine, putting up notable numbers such as a 4.35 40-yard dash and 23 reps on the bench press. Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle provided comments from NFL Network's Mike Mayock, who weighed in on the impression White made at the combine:

Daniel Jeremiah of the NFL Network weighed in on how this combine impacts the perception of White approaching draft day:

What White showed during his final season with the Mountaineers is that he can make virtually every play. Whether it's beating a defender over the top, working across the middle or taking a short pass and turning it into a first down, he's willing to do it all.

The most notable concern is speed. Although he's got enough quickness to make big plays, he's not the true burner many teams like out wide. Otherwise, the outlook is positive.

Chris Trapasso of NFL.com provides his scouting report:

Doug Farrar of Sports Illustrated notes the importance of not nitpicking a prospect too much:

That happens a lot during the draft process. It's easy to find negatives if that's all you're searching for. But White caught 109 passes for over 1,400 yards and 10 touchdowns in his final collegiate season. Furthermore, his skill set points toward NFL success.

Eric Edholm of Yahoo Sports provided comments from the rising star, who said he looks up to Larry Fitzgerald, Brandon Marshall and Julio Jones. He also mentioned Dez Bryant and explained why those are his go-to guys aside from being big names.

"I love watching those guys. Dez Bryant, too," White said. "The way they catch the ball, that's how I try to play. Using my body, being aggressive. Not waiting for it to come to me. Getting it every time it comes my way. That the kind of [NFL receiver] I want to be."

Given how close the receiver rankings are and the knowledge that they all bring a little something different to the table, a consensus is unlikely. Depending on what teams are looking for at the position, the big boards could look quite a bit different at the top.

All White can do is showcase all of his various strong points. He won't be the fastest player in the league, but his other tools are good enough to feel confident about his chances of success at the next level. The question is where he will land.
