Malcolm Butler Interception: Twitter Reacts to Game-Winning Super Bowl 2015 Play

Timothy RappFeb 1, 2015

Often in the Super Bowl, it's the players you least expect to have an impact who end up coming up huge in the game's biggest moments. At Super Bowl 49, it was rookie cornerback Malcolm Butler who played that role, intercepting Russell Wilson at the goal line to seal a 28-24 win and Super Bowl title for the New England Patriots.

NFL.com shared the play that will go down in NFL history:

Butler stayed humble in his postgame comments, per Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports:

Tom Brady was a bit more effusive in his praise, per Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston:

Of course, so much of the postgame conversation was centered around the decision of Seattle to throw the ball down by the goal line rather than run it in with Marshawn Lynch. KC Joyner of ESPN can't remember a play that caused so much buzz:

Tim Hasselbeck of ESPN agrees, though he offered the "give credit where credit is due" perspective:

Kevin Clark of the Wall Street Journal detailed how rare the interception in that situation was:

Butler is certainly a heck of a story. Greg A. Bedard of MMQB.com has more on the humble origins of Butler:

And John Buccigross of ESPN thinks he's quite the inspiration:

That Butler would make the game-winning play is such an unbelievable finish to a game that will be remembered as one of the truly great Super Bowls. And you have to imagine that Butler will see more and more playing time as his Patriots career continues.

Butler has his whole career in front of him. It's hard to imagine he'll ever make a bigger play, however.
