WWE Missed Opportunities: Fans May Never See Sting Face Undertaker

Travis WakemanJan 31, 2015

Is there a bigger dream match in professional wrestling than Sting versus The Undertaker? It has been talked about by fans for years, dating back to when Sting was at the top of WCW and Undertaker had done nearly all there was to do in WWE.

While Undertaker has faced just about every big name in the history of the business, a match with Sting has never taken place. That is mostly due to Sting's decision not to compete in WWE for the majority of his career.

But that has finally changed.

Sting made his WWE debut at Survivor Series last November, a sight fans had been waiting the better part of two decades to see.

Now that Sting had finally decided to come to WWE, a match with Undertaker would be inevitable, right?

Not so fast.

When Sting made his first appearance, it allowed Team Cena to defeat Team Authority, temporarily costing Triple H and Stephanie McMahon their jobs.

After Triple H returned, he used his power to fire Dolph Ziggler, Erick Rowan and Ryback, all of whom were part of Team Cena at Survivor Series.

However, John Cena was given an opportunity to win their jobs back. All he had to do was win a 3-on-1 Handicap match against Seth Rollins, Kane and Big Show on the January 19 edition of Monday Night Raw.

Sting appeared again, foiling the plans of The Authority and helping Cena get the victory.

The handwriting should have been on the wall at that point as to whom Sting would be facing at WrestleMania 31, but in the case that it wasn't for some fans, it seems all but confirmed now that Triple H has issued a challenge for Sting to show up at WWE Fast Lane, the next pay-per-view event.

Sting versus Triple H is likely what fans will be getting at WrestleMania.

After Brock Lesnar defeated Undertaker at WrestleMania 30 and broke his undefeated streak at the event in the process, it looked as though it would be the last time The Deadman would ever compete in WWE.

After all, he will be 50 years old by the time WrestleMania 31 rolls around and he hasn't been a full-time competitor for several years.

But the legacy Undertaker has created at WrestleMania has always made him one of the biggest draws for the event. One of the biggest questions going into the Showcase of the Immortals each year revolves around who will get the chance to face him.

WWE may have opted to go another route with Sting due to uncertainty surrounding Undertaker's status for the event. Still, that didn't stop the company from teasing fans with this video on WWE.com for its Fantasy Warfare series.

Perhaps the time has come and gone for this match to take place. Sting will be 56 years old when WrestleMania 31 takes place and an argument can be made that the two aging Superstars just wouldn't be able to put on the performance that they once could have.

Even so, there's a very good chance that fans who tune in for WrestleMania would much rather see the match that they always fantasized about in favor of Sting facing WWE COO Triple H.

Triple H is a legend in his own right, a Superstar who respects the history of the business as much as anyone. He will deliver when this match takes place.

Still, considering Sting and Undertaker may both be on the card at WrestleMania, only to be facing separate opponents, feels an awful lot like a missed opportunity.

At the same time, maybe it will be best to wonder what could have been.
