Biggest Takeaways from Gary Kubiak's Introductory Press Conference with Broncos
When John Fox and the Denver Broncos parted ways after four division titles and one Super Bowl appearance together, it became clear the next head coach was going to face extremely high expectations.
Gary Kubiak appears ready for the challenge.
During his introductory press conference on Tuesday afternoon, the 53-year-old head coach talked about thriving on the pressure of taking an already successful team to the next level in January and February, via The Denver Post:
Broncos GM and vice president John Elway talked about the new hire:
Jeff Legwold of ESPN and the Denver Post provided Kubiak's comments on his health:
"Kubiak on health scare with Texans "I probably ran myself into the ground a little bit.''
— Jeff Legwold (@Jeff_Legwold) January 20, 2015"
Offense, understandably, was the main focus of the press conference. When Kubiak was hired, there was immediate discussion on how his famous zone-blocking scheme, which often involves quarterback roll-outs, would mesh with Peyton Manning, who thrives inside the pocket.
But Kubiak discussed a willingness to amend his playbook in a way that most benefits the Broncos' personnel:
Of course, Manning's future—there has been rampant speculation about whether or not the future Hall of Famer will return to play in 2015—will have a large influence on how that playbook is ultimately built. Retirement talk has only increased after the addition of Kubiak, but Elway did confirm he discussed the decision with Manning before making the hire, via Around The NFL on Twitter:
Although Kubiak didn't reveal much about what he himself believed the 38-year-old was going to decide in terms of retirement, he did talk about supporting Manning, via CBS Denver's Vic Lombardi:
Should Manning opt to to hang up his cleats, Elways expressed confidence in backup quarterback Brock Osweiler:
Former offensive coordinator Adam Gase's future is also still undecided. A rising star among the coaching ranks, the 36-year-old is expected to land with either the Baltimore Ravens or Jacksonville Jaguars, per NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.
While finding someone to replace Gase will prove important, Kubiak made clear his intention of being involved with the offense and the play-calling:
Although much of the talk focused on the Broncos once again becoming a championship team, Kubiak still has work to do filling out his staff, addressing free agency—most notably Demaryius Thomas and Julius Thomas—and scouting draft prospects.
Kubiak, who knows what it's like to win Super Bowls in the Mile High City, appears up to the task at hand.
