Team in the Best Position to Succeed: New England Patriots
Every team that has advanced to the conference championships has earned it, but the team in the best position to succeed this round is the New England Patriots.
While the opposing Indianapolis Colts are coming off back-to-back playoff wins against Cincinnati and Denver, New England disposed of the always-dangerous Baltimore Ravens in the divisional round.
Now the Patriots host Indianapolis at Gillette Stadium and will be looking to beat the Colts for the second time this season. In Week 11, New England destroyed quarterback Andrew Luck and company in front of the Indy fans, 42-20.
Indianapolis is in a much different place right now, but the team lacks the postseason experience the Patriots possess. With Tom Brady being a three-time Super Bowl champion, he understands the pressure and has helped the entire team relax despite the circumstances.
As Shalise Manza Young of The Boston Globe pointed out on Twitter, New England’s locker room is loose ahead of such a monumental matchup:
The Colts and head coach Chuck Pagano will come into this matchup with a better game plan than they had against Denver. It won’t deviate much since the team did find success, but the coaching staff must ensure the strategy is also different from what Indianapolis used in Week 11.
Always willing to adapt, Patriots head coach bill Belichick spoke to Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com about changing his game plan on the fly according to what the Colts are throwing his way:
"At some point, you get as far as you can go, and you want to get your team to that point. Then you let the game unfold. No matter how much preparation you do, it’s still going to be different in the game. … I think you can only prepare to a point and then once it starts, it’s going to change some degree.
"
There is no doubting the offensive talent of New England. As long as Brady is under center and playing well, the team is always a legitimate Super Bowl threat. While the rushing attack has been middle of the road all season, the success of receivers Julian Edelman and Brandon LaFell, as well as tight end Rob Gronkowski, has made the Patriots pass attack one of the most dangerous in the league.
New England will put up big points on Indianapolis, but there is legitimate concern about how the Patriots defense will stop Luck. After allowing 428 total yards of offense last week against Baltimore, the New England defense will have its hands full with a Colts offense playing well right now.
Indianapolis has too much tenacity on its roster to go down Sunday without a fight, but with Brady’s on-field experience and Belichick putting all of the proper pieces in place, the Patriots should be able to pull out the win.
Predicted Final Score: New England 33, Indianapolis 30
