Cristiano Ronaldo Wins Globe Soccer Honour, Targets Ballon d'Or Triumph
Cristiano Ronaldo added yet another gong to his ever-enlarging trophy cabinet on Monday as he won the best player of the year at the Globe Soccer awards in Dubai.
On a successful night for Real Madrid—who won club of the year, while Carlo Ancelotti picked up the coaching award—Ronaldo was also voted the fans' favourite. The former Manchester United forward expressed his hope that there is more to come, per ESPN FC:
"I hope that it's a good sign [for the Ballon d'Or], but I'm not worried about that. The people who vote already have. I just feel happy it's one more trophy for my dedication and hard work. I want to say thank you to the people at Real Madrid, the players, the coach. We had a fantastic season, we won four trophies and we're one of the best sides in the world. To win this award is a great pleasure, I am very proud.

Ronaldo is nominated alongside Manuel Neuer and Lionel Messi for the Ballon d'Or—which will be awarded in Zurich on Jan. 12, 2015—after a year which included a second Champions League victory for the 29-year-old.

He broke the record for most goals scored during a European Cup campaign, scoring 17 times in 11 matches, and he has already netted 25 times in 14 La Liga appearances this term, per WhoScored.com.
For many, he is a shoo-in to take the Ballon d'Or, per football commentator Tim Caple, and his most recent award certainly seems to be paving the way for victory in Switzerland:
The only thing that may count against him in the voting is that his Portugal side were knocked out of the summer's World Cup at the group stages, while Messi was a runner-up and Neuer a key part of the victorious German team.
Ronaldo will look to finish 2014 on a high on Tuesday when Real take on AC Milan in a friendly in Dubai before the La Liga season resumes after its winter break in the new year.
