Hertha Berlin vs. Bayern Munich: How Die Roten Should Line Up in Bundesliga Game

Clark WhitneyNov 28, 2014

Bayern Munich resume their Bundesliga campaign on Saturday as they look to put a disappointing midweek defeat behind them. The Bavarian giants lost 3-2 to Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday and will be eager to get back to winning ways as they take on Hertha BSC at the Olympiastadion.

The Bavarian giants are Germany's only undefeated club, having won nine and drawn three fixtures overall. They enter Saturday's game with more than twice as many points (30) as their hosts (14), although a lengthy list of injuries will leave Pep Guardiola with some questions of how to rotate following Tuesday's result.

Ahead of Saturday's match, B/R takes a look at the lineup the Spaniard may pick to take on Hertha.

Goalkeeper: Manuel Neuer

Manuel Neuer continues to be Bayern's only fit first-team goalkeeper. The FIFA World Player of the Year nominee has been a constant presence in the Bayern team this season, and that is unlikely to change anytime soon.

Right-Back: Rafinha

After missing the early stages of the campaign, Rafinha has been a regular in Guardiola's team. The Brazil native was not called up to his national team for the international break and should be relatively fresh. With Bayern short of any other healthy option on the right of defense, Rafinha is a lock at right-back.

Centre-Back: Jerome Boateng

Jerome Boateng made a calamitous mistake over the weekend, but it's unlikely to cost him his place in Guardiola's XI. The trainer only has enough centre-backs to drop one of Boateng and Mehdi Benatia, and if anyone is dropped, it will probably be the latter due to the hot-headed nature of his transgression on Tuesday. Boateng has won the Champions League with Bayern and has always come through when it mattered most. He's not the defender most under pressure at this point.

Centre-Back: Dante

Benatia has formed a solid partnership with Boateng this season, but following the Moroccan defender's senseless tackle that resulted in his sending off against City, it would not be the least bit surprising if Guardiola were to punish him by relegating him to the bench for at least one game. That would result in Dante being brought back into the first lineup.

Left-Back: Juan Bernat

Like Neuer, Juan Bernat has established himself as a constant in Guardiola's Bayern team. The summer signing from Valencia has adapted to life in Munich with apparent ease, with his performances at club level even earning him his debut for Spain. Especially with David Alaba injured, Bernat's spot in the lineup is in no danger.

Central Midfield: Xabi Alonso

Xabi Alonso was both the hero and the villain for Bayern in midweek, scoring a brilliant equalizer before conceding possession in a way that effectively assisted Sergio Aguero for City's second goal. The 33-year-old showed both his class and his apparent fatigue. In most situations, he would be given a rest. But with Bayern short of fit staff, it's more likely that the Spaniard will start before perhaps being brought off for Bastian Schweinsteiger in the second half.

Central Midfield: Pierre Hojbjerg

The spot in midfield alongside Alonso will likely be between Pierre Hojbjerg and Sebastian Rode. After Benatia's sending off in midweek, it was the latter who was substituted off to make room for Dante in defense. As such, it appears Hojbjerg has the head-to-head advantage and is therefore more likely to start in Berlin.

Central Midfield: Mario Gotze

Bayern's dearth of fit central midfielders has meant more room for their attackers to fit into the team. On Saturday, there's a good chance that Mario Gotze—a very forward-minded player by nature but one who has played even in a holding role on a couple of occasionswill fill in as a central midfielder. The 22-year-old has been in brilliant form this season but didn't start against City. He'll be raring to go against Hertha assuming he doesn't take a spot on the bench again.

Right Forward: Arjen Robben

In general, City did a very good job of keeping mercurial forward Arjen Robben in check. The Dutchman is the type of player to take personal responsibility for his team's success, and if he starts against Hertha, he will be one to watch. Guardiola may well rotate his forwards, but there's a good chance Robben will retain his spot on the right wing.

Center Forward: Robert Lewandowski

This season hasn't exactly been Robert Lewandowski's best, but the Poland international found the net against City, scoring for the second consecutive match and the third time in four fixtures. Now that he's starting to find his form, the ex-Dortmund man surely will not be left out of Guardiola's side.

Left Forward: Thomas Muller

The position of left forward at Bayern has long belonged to Franck Ribery, but the 31-year-old now is in something of a struggle for his role, as Gotze and Thomas Muller have emerged as serious competition to displace him from the starting lineup. It would be a surprise to see Muller benched for a second consecutive game, so one can expect the Germany international to be named as part of Guardiola's first XI.
