NASCAR at Talladega 2014: Live Results and Analysis from Geico 500
Brad Keselowski wins at Talladega!
The race at Talladega didn’t see its first caution until Lap 60, when Jamie McMurray spun out and caused Joey Logano to spin too.
Drivers were able to race in different lanes during the Geico 500, and before the first caution came out, Talladega had several different leaders, including Brad Keselowski and Jimmie Johnson.
Halfway through the Geico 500, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was in the lead, with his teammate, Johnson, right behind him.
As green-flag pit stops began at Lap 103, a huge wreck happened in the back of the field, collecting Chase driver Kyle Busch. Busch was ultimately knocked out of the Chase because of the wreck, which he had no control over. Austin Dillon in the 3 car got into the 18 during the wreck and made the car undrivable.
The 18 eventually made it back onto the track, but it wasn't enough to keep him in the Chase.
As the race continued, Johnson and Earnhardt Jr. made their way back to the front again, along with the 2 car of Keselowski.
While drivers were racing to stay in the Chase, Danica Patrick, who had been running well all day, took the lead and was looking to win her first race.
A caution came out with 13 laps to go, and Ryan Newman took the lead. Newman held the lead, but with five laps to go, another caution flag came out for debris.
Talladega came down to a green-white-checkered finish, but even that wasn’t enough to end the race. A caution came out as the race came to an end, and Dale Jr. was caught up in the wreck, ending his Chase for the Sprint Cup.
With three laps to go, Keselowski got out in front and held off the rest of the field to win the race!
Johnson, Kahne, Earnhardt Jr. and Kyle Busch won’t be moving on to the next round of the Chase.
Next week, the Eliminator Round starts at Martinsville. Who will win and lock himself into the final round of the Chase? Make sure to join us next week to find out!
