A rather complex roster situation forced Williams to become a healthy scratch for the Bills' Week 6 loss that season to the New England Patriots, setting off a series of events that ended with Williams spending most of his time working on the scout team before Buffalo placed him on the waived/injured list in early December.
Even before sitting out a string of games, he was playing a limited role in the Buffalo offense. He didn't have more than two catches in any of the nine games he played. That was in large part due to a crowded Bills receiving corps.
He finished the 2014 season with just eight receptions for 142 yards and a score. He wasn't signed by a team last season and ended up sitting out the entire year.
The biggest task for Williams is showing he can still be an impact player. He started his career with three straight seasons of at least 60 catches and tallied 23 touchdowns over that span. The last few years haven't lived up to that same standard.
Perhaps the change of scenery into an offense where he should take on a bigger role will get him back on track. But getting more separation in the secondary is essential if he is to take advantage of a potential uptick in targets.
In Kansas City, Williams will have the chance to compete for the fourth or fifth wide receiver role. Jeremy Maclin is entrenched as the team's top wideout, while Albert Wilson established himself as the team's No. 2 option out wide, though he's hardly guaranteed to maintain that role.
The Chiefs currently have 2015 third-round pick Chris Conley and free-agent acquisition Rod Streater competing for targets, so Williams will have a fight on his hands to even see the field. But if he can regain the form that saw him establish himself as a promising young receiver from 2010 to 2012, he could make an impact for the Chiefs in 2016.
