Original Text:

Washington Redskins tight end Niles Paul will not return to Thursday night's game against the New York Giants and is being evaluated for a concussion after being knocked unconscious on a pass reception late in the second quarter.

Paul caught a pass up the seam from Kirk Cousins with less than two minutes remaining in the first half and was shaken up when his head got sandwiched between safeties Antrel Rolle and Quintin Demps. The three players appeared to collide heads simultaneously when Paul lowered his head to brace for contact after making the grab.

Bleacher Report's Will Carroll noted that Paul went into the so-called "fencing response"—an automatic sign a person has lost consciousness:

Paul, who has started each of the last three weeks for the injured Jordan Reed, had three catches for 60 yards at the time of his exit. He came into Week 4 as one of the year's breakout performers, sitting only one yard behind Jimmy Graham for the highest receiving total among tight ends.

Paul recently told reporters about the effort he put in prior to the season:

"

I worked really hard this offseason. I busted my butt in OTAs, minicamp. Training camp came around, and I played really well. I've been getting the opportunities. Hopefully, I make the most of it.

"

The former Nebraska standout will be replaced by Logan Paulsen. The fifth-year veteran has been with Washington his entire career but is not the pass-catching threat of Reed or Paul. He had only seven yards on his four receptions coming into this week.

If diagnosed with a concussion, Paul will have to be cleared by an independent doctor to return to the field under league protocol. With 11 days to recover between now and next Monday's game against the Seattle Seahawks, Paul will have as much time as an NFL schedule allots to get healthy.
