Wednesday at the 2014 Sochi Olympics will be a jam-packed day, with eight events awarding medals and the men's hockey tournament starting to really heat up in the elimination phase. It's gonna be fun, folks.

In skiing, the men's giant slalom run will award medals. Ditto for the women's bobsled, the men's and women's parallel giant slalom in snowboarding and the women's 5000-meter race in speedskating, among others.

Oh, and let's not forget about the women's short program in figure skating. If there was one day thus far you wouldn't want to miss, it's Wednesday. Luckily for you, with the guide below you won't have to miss a thing.

In total, eight events—men's giant slalom, the mixed biathlon relay, the women's bobsled, the men's and women's team sprint in cross-country and the men's and women's parallel giant slalom in snowboarding—will all award medals on Wednesday.

And yet, it's the sports that won't be handing out medals that might earn the most scrutiny.

All eyes will be on Olympic hockey, as the four teams with a bye—Sweden, Canada, the United States and Finland—all start their knockout phase. All eyes will be on the host Russians facing the Finns in the premier matchup of the quarterfinals.

Of course, the ice will also be the setting for the much-anticipated women's short program.

Can the United States' Gracie Gold get off to a strong start and put herself in medal contention? How will Russian Julia Lipnitskaia—just 15 years of age—handle the pressure in front of her fellow Russians? Will Yuna Kim put herself in a position to defend her gold medal? Can Japan's Mao Asada overcome Kim this time around?

Kim is certainly the favorite, but in Russia, Lipnitskaia has gotten all of the attention, to the point that her new-found celebrity has become a bit overwhelming. From Philip Hersh of the Chicago Tribune (subscription required):

"At the beginning of the season, her name wasn't even at the top two of the women's list to make the Olympic team," said Oleg Vasiliev of St. Petersburg, the 1984 Olympic pairs champion. "Now no one is talking about anyone but her."

It has reached the point that Lipnitskaya's mother, Daniela, told the newspaper Komosomolskaya Pravda on Thursday that she and her daughter are already tired of journalists, saying, "Yulia is an ordinary girl, and now she is seriously scared of all this attention."

Vasiliev said Friday that the Russian press had then been asked not to bother Lipnitskaya during the final days of her attempt to become the first Russian women's Olympic singles champion.

"She is already a big hero here," he said. "If she wins, the reaction would probably be comparable to our hockey team winning."

The United States has had its struggles on the slopes in these Olympics, but Ted Ligety will be hoping to end that on Wednesday in the giant slalom. Ligety is the favorite in the event, but he has had a rough Olympics thus far and has earned just one gold in his career despite dominating the sport outside of the Olympics.

To his credit, he isn't worried about his disappointing Sochi games thus far, as he told David Leon Moore of USA Today:

Every event is totally different. It's not like those (results) matter that much. I'm just going to push hard on my race on Wednesday. I know where my skiing can be. This season, I've had a lot of ups and downs in other races and results but still been able to put together really fast runs in giant slalom.

We can't end this article without mentioning the semifinals in the curling competition, where all eyes in Sweden, Great Britain and Canada will be affixed, as all three countries are represented in the men's and women's competition.

On the women's side, the Swiss ladies will be hoping to crash that party, while for the men, the Chinese will be hoping to earn a medal. Of course, in Canada the curlers are the best thing behind the hockey team, so there will be plenty of pressure on both the men and women to earn gold.
