Why Evgeni Malkin Should Be Suspended for Game Three

Andrew JordanJun 1, 2009

During Game two of the Stanley Cup finals on Sunday, the Detroit Red Wings beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1 to take a two-games-to-none lead in the series.

However, there is a bigger story going on about that game as with 19 seconds left in the game, Penguins star Evgeni Malkin elbowed Red Wings star Hendrik Zetterberg after the whistle was blown, which caused a fight between the two players.

For what happened, Malkin got an instigator penalty and because he did this with less than five minutes remaining in the game, he is supposed to get an automatic one game suspension.

But NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell reviewed this play and claimed that Malkin wasn't trying to send a message and because of that, he won't be suspended.

In my honest opinion, I cannot believe what Campbell just did. Malkin was clearly sending a message for Game Three by starting a fight with the Red Wings best player (who by the way never had a five minute major for fighting ever in his career until Sunday) and because of this, he should definitely be suspended.

I understand that Malkin has been the best player during the playoffs this season but he broke the instigation rule and he should face the consequences for his actions.

Also, the league has to start being strict on ALL PLAYERS, including superstars as Sidney Crosby had already has had his infamous moment with being the third man in a fight earlier this year, and would have been suspended if he weren't a superstar. These actions are completely unacceptable for any sport, and the NHL must put a stop to these actions
