The Leavenworth Connection...Mr. Vick Comes to Kansas City

James AdkinsMay 19, 2009

Could it be Chiefs Fans?

Should we be expecting a press conference out at One Arrowhead Drive in the coming weeks, declaring that Michael Vick's next NFL home will be in Kansas City as a member of the Chiefs?

His most recent residence, the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, is just a 30 minute hop, skip, and a jump down the yellow brick road to Arrowhead Stadium.

So...doesn't it make sense to sign Vick as a backup to quarterback Matt Cassel?

Just look at last year's starter, Tyler Thigpen.

He was at his best when he was running around in a spread offense designed to take advantage of his versatility. If Cassel were to get hurt, undoubtedly Chiefs offensive coordinator Chan Gailey could take full advantage of having the uber-athletic Vick behind center, right?

Unfortunately for Vick, the Merry Old Land of Oz will never find out.

Yes, it's true that Kansas City is a town of rabid Chiefs fans hungering for a championship as much or more than any other group of fans in the NFL.

Yet, Kansas City is also a place where strong Midwestern values will always stand in the way of any desire to win at all costs, and signing Vick would be too much of a step in that direction.

Sure, it would be fun to see a short yardage package loaded with Vick, Larry Johnson, and Jamaal Charles in the Chiefs backfield. Or better yet, let us envision a Chiefs version of the Wildcat offense with Vick at the helm.

It would most certainly drive opposing defenses crazy.

Don't get too attached to the idea though, because it won't happen.

Nope, the only trip that Vick will be making to Kansas City will be when he leaves prison shortly after midnight tonight to get on a plane at Kansas City International Airport to head out of town.

Then again, I suppose I shouldn't be so hasty with my prediction as we absolutely could see Vick back in Kansas City in the not so distant future...

The Raiders come to town on Sept. 20.
