According to Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times, the Mariners are discussing a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates involving their starting shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt.
The Mariners would get SS Jack Wilson in the deal.
Yeah, I like it, but how about you?
You might say this is a terrible deal for the Mariners because Wilson is 31 and owed $6.2 mil, comparing to Betancourt, who is 27, and owed much less in a same period.
But here's the thing: Is Betancourt worth keeping?
Betancourt has .258 batting average, with .284 on base percentage. He only took five walks thus far in 128 at-bats. Not only his hitting is in trouble, but his defence is lacking . He already has six errors in 35 games. Skipper Don Wakamatsu benched him earlier this month because of his struggle.
This isn't the first time Betancourt struggled like this. He is known for inconsistency all through his career, and that got worse this year. Also, many people thought that Betancourt's defence is similar to what Omar Vizquel has, but so far, he is probably the worst defensive shortstop in the entire MLB.
On the bench, utility player Ronny Cedeno is proving that he can play better than Betancourt. Why bench a guy who is overplaying the starter? This trade will give Cedeno, a time as a starting shortstop.
Another thing. Carlos Triunfel, the Mariners' top infield prospect is preparing for his debut to the big league in few years. If Betancourt is there to block his path, it won't be good for both him and the Mariners. I want to see the Mariners creating a situation like the Rangers did with Elvis Andrus.
Jack Wilson won't do a lot for the Mariners because Cedeno would start in place for Betancourt. But Wilson is a good player to have as a utility player. He can play solid defence, and can hit for average.
Pirates would love to dump Wilson and get younger shortstop like Betancourt. Maybe they might add another player in the deal to fill the salary differential. Now, this all depends on Zduriencik. Trigger it? Or hold it? Go and trigger it, Dr. Z. You won't regret this move.
