THANK GOD!  What I mean is, thank god I didn’t draft Manny Ramirez in any of my drafts.  For all of you who did, I cant really blame you at the time, but right now that pick is biting you in the you know what.

Major League Baseball suspended Manny yesterday for 50 games due to taking a banned substance known as hGC.  Now, I’m not here to discuss the ramifications that this will have on his career, but I am here to discuss how it will hurt your fantasy team.

By no means should you drop him though, as he will be back in July.  However, you are now losing 10 to 20 home runs and 20-40 RBI’s, plus a .300+ batting average.

If you own SS Rafael Furcal, 2B Orlando Hudson, OF Andre Ethier, OF Matt Kemp, or C Russell Martin, then this doesn’t help you either.  However, it makes OF Juan Pierre a good pickup.  Let’s go over how this will affect each player.

OF Juan Pierre – Pierre will now step into the starting LF spot and possibly into the leadoff spot in the lineup due to his ability to get on base and his incredible speed.

He has been hitting ninth in the lineup, behind the pitcher, due to that same speed and the fact that Rafael Furcal is hitting leadoff behind him, but that could change at any time.

There are still good hitters in this lineup, so Pierre could score some runs too.  I would go ahead and grab him if you need some speed, as he may steal 20 bases in those 50 games.

SS Rafael Furcal – This will depend on what Joe Torre does with the lineup.  He could gain value in the two hole, but he could also lose value.  If he gets bumped from the leadoff spot, he may not steal as many bases, but he may have more RBI chances with Pierre on base.  Either way, he is still a top five SS, if he stays healthy.

C Russell Martin – Martin will now be expected to hit better than he has recently, now being moved into the fifth spot.  He should have plenty of RBI opportunities and has some home run potential, but his speed/stolen base numbers will probably suffer.  He is still an elite Catcher, but he may lose some value due to his decrease in steal attempts.

OF Andre Ethier – He definitely loses that protection with Manny out, but he should still hit.  He will probably be entrenched in the third spot in the order and will lose some run scoring opportunities, but should keep his power numbers up.  He still remains a must start in all formats.

OF Matt Kemp – Another guy who loses a little value, but not much.  Without Manny, he will probably swap between the fifth and sixth spots in the lineup and will still steal a ton of bases.  Another guy who is still a must start in all formats.

2B Orlando Hudson – This is the guy who may lose the most value.  If he gets moved from the two spot, he will score less runs since he won’t be getting hit home by Ethier or Manny.  He should still produce a decent batting average and could still hit 10-15 home runs, so keep him on your roster.
