Ducks-Red Wings: Controversy in Anaheim!
Will the controversial goal in Anaheim do in the defending Stanley Cup Champions? The Detroit Red Wings are now only two losses away from elimination.
Aided by this controversial whistle and some stellar goaltending from Jonas Hiller, the Anaheim Ducks held on for a huge 2-1 win to take a 2-1 lead in the Western Conference semifinal series.
Proving to be this year’s Cinderella team, Anaheim, who captured the last playoff spot, has shocked the hockey world in the opening round by beating the first seeded San Jose Sharks and now are proving to be a handful for the Wings.
Scoring for the Ducks were a couple of key veterans, Teemu Selanne and Scott Niedermayer, who both played big roles in helping Anaheim capture their first ever Stanley Cup back in 2007.
Also playing a big role was second year goalie Jonas Hiller, who made an astonishing 45 saves in lowering his goals against average to 1.49 in his last two games.
Fate was definitely on the Ducks side in this game as the Wings’ Marian Hossa appeared to have scored in the dying minutes but to the Wings disbelief it was ruled off due to referee Brad Watson losing site of the puck and therefore whistling the play dead.
Anaheim, who have registered a 4-0 record this spring when winning after two periods flirted with danger in the third when they gave the Red Wings two power plays to work with late in the game. Hiller once again bailed his team out with 18 saves in the final twenty minutes to secure the victory. With the win, Anaheim are now only two wins away from participating for the third time in four years in the Western Conference Finals.
Things weren’t all great for the Ducks on this night however as they lost a key stay-at-home defenseman in James Wisniewski, who was shaken up from a Tomas Holmstrom elbow. He was taken off the ice on a stretcher and no decisions have been made on his status for game four Thursday once again in Anaheim.
