It seems somewhat ludicrous that a man who so recently took the European Under-21's Championship by storm would be so easily let go by mother club Barcelona this summer, for what is effectively peanuts in the modern game.
Thiago, who despite being touted as one of the next best players in world football, has somewhat surprisingly barely been given any regular first-team football by Barca this season, leaving the Spaniard disheartened and looking for a way out to find regular playing time.
As a result of these lack of appearances the release clause on Thiago's contact has now been triggered. In Spanish football if a player is not used enough by their team, it is possible to simply buy them out of their contract if the player so wishes.
This is what will more than likely happen with Alcantara and United in the coming weeks.
For what the Red Devils would be purchasing, £17 million is an absolute steal. Thiago is one of the most promising attacking midfielders in the modern game, and would bring an element of flair that the United center of the park have severely missed since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Aged just 22, Thiago would have plenty of time to adjust and become molded into the United style of play.
Perhaps what is most encouraging of all for David Moyes' men is the fact that Barca are trying their hardest right now to convince their young talent not to leave.
While this does delay the transfer somewhat, it also suggests just how good this young man really is at the beautiful game.
A team like Barca have a near unlimited selection of world-class talent, so the fact that they recognize the ability and future importance of Thiago speaks volumes for his future.
I cannot tell you how excited I am about the potential of this transfer, and how excited you all should be too!
Thiago is one of the next crop of Spain players who we have so often seen dominating the world game. Having just one of that team at United would be amazing for the club.
The price tag is nothing compared to what this fellow will give in return.
