Are Some NBA Teams Relying Too Much On Certain Players?

Danny DukkerMay 1, 2009

It's all about the stars right? Well is that really true? It's alright to have star player, but it's a different story when that player takes over the whole team. We see this alot, one player who runs the team and without whom they would loose many games.

One example would be Dwayne Wade and the Heat. This year Dwayne Wade led his team in virtually every category. It's scary to think what will happen if he stops playing for them. If the Heat loose D-Wade, you could argue that they will loose about 20 or more wins on the season. He has nailed countless game winners and has had many amazing performances.

Is this really a good thing? I mean he has about one or two other players who can knock don shots, but their number are miniscule compared to Wade's. He is the team and without him they would not be in the playoofs. This has to change a maybe the draft will help Miami out.

Another example are the Cavaliers. Their offence and defence revolve around King James who luckily for them, is a great player. He rebounds for them, he scores, he blocks shots, he steals, he passes, and he encourages guys to play hard. Without him, the Cavs would certainly not be the number one seed, and one could even argue that they would not be in the playoffs.

This is ridiculous because if anything happens to him, the Cavs are screwed. Think about their last home-game of the season, the could have tied the record for having the best home record. James didn't play because of the playoffs being so close, and no surprise, the Cavs lost. It should also be mentioned that they lost to the Sixers.

There are many other examples: Blazers and Roy, Houston and Yao, Sixers and Iggy, Magic and Howard, Mavs and Dirk, Durant and Thunder, KG and Celtics, Spurs and Manu etc.

There are many, many more examples. I think that teams should try to avoid relying on one player so much and try working on their young talent. Manu was injured and the Spurs lost in the first round of the playoffs. Not a coincidence.

Dirk was great in that Mavs-Spurs series and they won. Likewise, KG is out for the Celtics and the Bulls just took them to a seven game series! Teams have tried (the Mavs have Terry and Kidd taking more shots) but they still need to work at it.

An example to capp of the article: My favorite team (Suns) are relying way to heavily on Amar'e and this year did not make the playoffs for only the 13th time in franchise history. They also need a change and I had an article on that not too long ago.

So this is my opinion and I will have a poll here so you can tell me yours. Comment and thank you for reading this.
