Not only will Kentucky Derby winner Orb and Preakness winner Oxbow line up for the big race on Saturday, but several other top horses in the country—Revolutionary, Overanalyze and Vyjack to name a few—will decorate one of the most interesting fields thus far in 2013.

While the weather looks like it could be an issue once again (h/t Weather.com)—rain was a factor at both the Derby and the Preakness—the spirits of the horse racing fans will not be dampened.

Weather Updates

This year’s chase for the Triple Crown has seen plenty of Mother Nature infusing herself into the conversation. While no horse can obtain the feat this year, the weather is still likely to play a factor during Saturday’s race.

UPDATE: Friday, June 7, 7:30 a.m. ET by Donald Wood

The initial forecasts for Saturday’s race from Belmont Park called for heavy amounts of rain, but as each day passes, the likelihood of moisture has dropped. Now Weather.com is calling for a partly-cloudy day featuring just a 20-percent chance of rain:

This is great news for horse racing fans after both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes were both forced to deal with rain on the radar around post time. With no rain expected, the festivities surrounding the Belmont Stakes can go off without a hitch.

UPDATE: Thursday, June 6, 11:00 a.m. ET by Donald Wood

While the weather outlook for the 2013 Belmont Stakes was dreary earlier in the week, Weather.com is now reporting that the rain storms expected in the Elmont, N.Y. area will be confined to the morning:

Weather.com

The expected post time for the race is around 6:20 p.m. ET, and with the rain expected in the morning, the track’s grounds-keeping crew should have ample time to get the course ready for the race Saturday night.

According to Weather.com, Belmont Park is expected to face rain throughout race day, with the chance of precipitation rising all the way to 60 percent. It is still early in the week, and the hope is that Saturday stays dry, but the track will be planning for moisture.

Just as both Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby and Pimlico Race Course for the Preakness Stakes got the track as close to perfect as possible considering the weather, the grounds crew at Belmont Park will have the course ready when the horses post.

The track may be sloppy at race time, but there is almost nothing that will stop officials from running the Belmont Stakes.

Breaking Down the Belmont

After losing much of the hype that can surround the Belmont Stakes when a horse wins the first two legs of the coveted Triple Crown, the interest for the final race in the trifecta is still through the roof.

There is still plenty to watch this Saturday, as both Orb and Oxbow will look to steal another leg of the Triple Crown chase at Belmont Park. While it doesn’t mean as much with neither taking both previous races, the battle for supremacy between these two stallions will be amazing.

Add in the fact that another wild-card horse could steal the show, and this will be a great race.

Oxbow and Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens will look to keep the momentum going from their Preakness win at Belmont, but with Orb looking for redemption and other top contenders looking to make a name for themselves in their last opportunity, this promises to be a wild ride.

This is the kind of event that hardcore and casual horse-racing fans alike will enjoy.
