Phoenix's Sun Setting Early

Vincent YinMay 1, 2009

The Phoenix Suns have gotten an early break rather than joining with 15 other teams in a gruesome battle for the golden glory, the championship.

Even though the Suns haven't seen much success this season, Steve Nash and Shaquille O'Neal have hit the top 15 best selling jersey list. Nash was at No. 13, while Shaquille O'Neal was right behind him at No. 14. Overall, the Suns finished at seventh place for most sold jerseys for the 2008-2009 season.

Also, as you can see here, the Suns have done a lot for the community while having fun at the same time. They have organized many fundraisers, charities, and events throughout the season.

Recently, the winner of the Dan Marjerle Hustle Award, Louis Amundson, pulled a huge prank on Shaq, putting peanuts in his car. They have also made lots of videos of them messing around, whether it is the payback on Louis Amundson, or playing soccer with Shaq in goals.

Twitter has also been a new hobby for a few of the Suns players, including Shaq, Nash, coach Gentry, and even Jason Richardson. It's a great way to stay updated on the players.

Not much has been revealed since Shaq's announcement that he wants to play for Mark Cuban in Dallas. With all of the fun that he's been having and treatment that he's been getting by the Suns and staff, he might change his mind.

If it weren't for the Suns training staff, Shaq wouldn't be as healthy as he is.

There have been a fair number of Suns interviews; most of them seem satisfied with where they are now.

The Suns must be having an enjoyable early start to the offseason, because the Suns need to start training very hard to make sure that they will be healthy and ready.

Here are some of the Suns' accomplishments:

  • Steve Nash is the first player in NBA history to shoot over 50 percent from the floor, 90 percent from the line, and 40 percent from downtown in NBA history for three straight seasons. Larry Bird was the only other player to accomplish that feat in two consecutive seasons.
  • Grant Hill appeared in 82 games for the first time in his career.
  • The Suns were 17-3 this season with holding a team under 100 points.
  • Shaquille Oโ€™Neal led the NBA in field goal percentage for the 10th time in his career. He was the first Suns player to lead the league in that category since Cedric Ceballos did so during the 1992-93 season.
  • The Suns averaged the most fast-break points in the league since the All-Star Break, while also leading the league in scoring in that period and overall for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
  • The Suns recorded five 40-point quarters since the All-Star break while only reaching that mark two times in the 203 previous periods that preceded it.
  • The Suns finished the season with the second highest win total for a non-playoff team since the NBA adopted the 16-team format in the 1983-84 season. They ended up with seven more wins than the Pistons, who were the eighth seed the Eastern Conference playoffs.
  • Suns Head Coach Alvin Gentry owned the best percentage out of all the head coaches that took over mid season.

The Suns have tried but failed. Hopefully, next season the Suns will shine brighter.
