Chelsea FC: Frank Lampard Ready to Lead Blues in Europa League Final (Video)

Michael CummingsJun 8, 2018

Frank Lampard has the goal record, the captaincy for a night and, if the reports are true, a new one-year contract. Now he's ready to lead Chelsea to another piece of silverware.

Chelsea, last season's UEFA Champions League winners, will contest another European final on Wednesday night, this time taking on Benfica in the Europa League's marquee event. Lampard, the Blues' veteran 34-year-old midfielder, will lead the team out as captain (per The Guardian) in place of the injured John Terry.

The honor comes on the heels of another, perhaps even greater, distinction. Lampard set the club's scoring record (he now has 203) on Saturday with two goals against Aston Villa in the Premier League.

On Tuesday, the Daily Telegraph broke a report that said Lampard and Chelsea had agreed to a new one-year contract that would extend the England international's stay at Stamford Bridge.

All in all, not a bad week for Lampard, who will play his 11th cup final with Chelsea on Wednesday. That record includes four FA Cup triumphs, two League Cup titles and of course last season's Champions League crown.

So let's just say Lampard is accustomed to this sort of atmosphere. If anyone is used to playing in cup finals, it's Lampard. Right, Frank?

"No, not really, no. I think your experience helps, but I think every occasion is different," Lampard said in an interview with Chelsea's official YouTube channel.

So there you have it. Even Frankie Lampard can be struck by the occasion. When asked if he is approaching Wednesday's final like any other game, Lampard said that is not the case.

"No, it's different, it's different, there's no doubt," he said. "I mean, the coverage of it, the feeling when you're on the plane on the way over here, the feeling we'll have (Wednesday) in the hotel when you can feel the buzz in the town—they're the things that make them special games."

The full interview, which includes comments from Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta, appears above. Enjoy, then let us know how you think Wednesday's game will go.

Will Lampard lead Chelsea to more glory? Or will Benfica claim a first European trophy in 51 years?
