The excitement around the 2013 Super Bowl and the annual rush to watch the commercials during the event is through the roof, and one of the spots getting the most attention is Samsung’s "Next Big Thing" ad featuring LeBron James, Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd.
That may feel like an overboard cast for a cell phone commercial, but this is the Super Bowl, folks.
This funny ad starts with the duo of Rogen and Rudd conversing in a lobby, but the two men soon realize they are they both there for the same part and begin to verbally jab each other.
As it is every time these two get together, the one-liners are absolutely hilarious.
Add in the comedy genius of the much underrated Bob Odenkirk and the laughter the three veterans of the business cause, and the only thing missing from this commercial is a cameo by a famous athlete.
That’s where former NBA MVP and basketball star LeBron James comes in with a great one-liner of his own about pitching the idea of appearing on an iPad during the commercial—while appearing on an iPad in the commercial.
The subtle jokes throughout this ad are perfect, and it's easy to tell that this ad is geared toward the smart football fans that want the kind of funny they would find in one of their favorite movies. With so many people watching the Super Bowl each year, the creative teams that develop these ideas must continue to top themselves, and this ad is one of the best so far.
While there is little doubt that this commercial likely cost Samsung a pretty penny to make, the impact of a commercial this awesome on Super Sunday will be worth the investment.
Ad agencies can’t go wrong with Rudd, Rogen and James; that’s a fact.
