Well, it looks like wedded bliss won't be finding Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki after all, folks—for now. According to a statement released by McIlroy's representative, the 23-year-old Northern Irishman has denied gossip that he proposed while in Australia:
On behalf of Rory McIlroy, I would like to confirm that he has NOT become engaged to Caroline Wozniacki as was originally reported in Australian press. Rory is in Australia to support Caroline before he heads in January to Abu Dhabi.
McIlroy, who is the reigning world No. 1 golfer, has been dating the Danish tennis star since 2011, and both can regularly be seen at each other's events.
The Australian Associated Press (per Golf.com) was one of the first sites to report that Wozniacki had been spotted with a diamond ring on her left hand in Australia. She is there preparing for the Brisbane International tournament, and McIlroy's presence along with the appearance of a ring triggered widespread engagement rumors.
Australian media reported Friday that Caroline Wozniacki arrived to play at the Brisbane International with a diamond ring on her left ring finger, sparking speculation that she and boyfriend Rory McIlroy had become engaged.
It looks like McIlroy and Wozniacki are still just your everyday boyfriend and girlfriend for now.
Of course, your average boyfriend and girlfriend aren't usually a super-couple whose future children would go on to eviscerate the PGA, LPGA, ATP and WTA tours at the same time—but, alas, it looks like we'll have to wait before speculating on the future of these two lovebirds.
For now, it looks like they've chosen to end 2012 happy in their current relationship and looking forward to future dominance on their fields of play.
As for those wedding bells? Well, 2013 is right around the corner.
