Johnny Manziel: Texas A&M QB Wants to Be Compared to Brett Favre

Randy ChambersJun 2, 2018

When watching Johnny Manziel play football on Saturdays, he kind of reminds you of your typical dual-threat quarterback. A little bit of Doug Flutie, a splash of Pat White, a hint of Denard Robinson and maybe a little Eric Crouch as well.

However, if you ask Manziel whom he would like to be compared to, it is not any of those guys.

On the Dan Patrick Show on Friday morning, the Texas A&M superstar said he wants to be compared to the ultimate gunslinger.

What?

Brett Favre was hardly a dual-threat quarterback during his days at Southern Mississippi. In fact, he didn't finish one season with positive rushing yards and didn't score one touchdown on the ground, according to Sports-Reference.com.

As a pro, Favre began to show some of his wheels, but he was never to be confused with a quarterback that could kill you with his legs.

He certainly could never make plays like this, either.

Favre also holds the NFL record with 336 interceptions in his career. He threw at least 20 interceptions in six seasons, which has always forced me to put him into the overrated category when talking about elite NFL signal-callers.

Manziel is a freshman quarterback, but he's learned how to throw the ball away at a young age. He really hasn't looked much like a Favre through his first season, and he has only thrown eight interceptions out of 400 pass attempts.

With that being said, maybe this is Manziel just trying to break free of the stereotypes. He doesn't want to be known for being just a running quarterback because historically those guys don't last long at the next level. He wants the world to know that he can make plays with his arm and throw an accurate football.

Whatever the case may be, I think we have all seen enough of one Favre for a lifetime.

Here is to hoping Manziel remains "Johnny Football" and doesn't turn into a guy who completes oodles of passes to the other team and can't make a decision to save his life.
