According to the Dallas Morning News, the Dallas Cowboys are looking to move troubled safety Roy Williams. Though details are light on where he’s being shopped, the team is looking to make a little room under the salary cap.

Williams first burst onto the scene as a strong hard hitting safety out of Texas that emerged as a difference maker for the Cowboys defense. Following his rookie season, Williams made his first of five trips to the pro bowl.

Yet after his five Pro Bowl seasons in Dallas, the Cowboys are still looking to trade Williams.

He has become a liability in the passing game and isn’t as strong against the run as in the past. Williams also fractured his arm twice last season and only played in three games. So his participation in the defense as of late has been gaunt, to say the least.

However, if the team decides to move him, who is available to replace Williams in the defensive backfield?

Cornerback Anthony Henry has expressed desire to move to Williams’ position, but who will replace Henry?

With newly created cap room by trading or releasing Roy, which seems likely, the ‘Boys may have the ability to pick up free agent corner Chris McAllister. If the Cowboys indeed decide to look in his direction, McAllister may be able to lobby for his former teammate, Ray Lewis.

Lewis has expressed his desire to play for the Cowboys, but Dallas may not have the money available to pick up the star linebacker. With contracts negotiations ongoing with hybrid linebacker DeMarcus Ware, there isn’t much wiggle room left for many free agent signings.

If Williams is released or traded, it will signal what many have called for in recent years. Williams has been burned by the Redskins and Giants on deep routes, which are two of the Cowboys fiercest rivals. With a more experienced safety to guard against the deep ball, the Cowboys will have the ability to place more pressure on the quarterback.

But is the team making a mistake in trying to dump Roy? After all, he has made five Pro Bowls and is a feared hitter around the league. In trading the safety, the team will only save $2 million in cap space, which isn’t much in today’s free market.
