With free agency set to begin within two hours, the Vikings will likely announce the trade for Houston Texans quarterback Sage Rosenfels. Rosenfels even flew into the Twin Cities today, according to Access Vikings.
With the quarterback issue addressed for now—apparently—it is time to look at who the Vikings may sign within the next 24 hours, or over the weekend.
Last year three players were signed within the first weekend of free agency. They were Madieu Williams, deceptive FB Thomas Tapeh, and WR Bernard Berrian. With this year’s free agency about to start, the Vikings surprisingly have a lot of money still, even after last year’s spending spree. They have around the same amount of money they had last year, at $32 million in cap space.
It is widely believed the Vikings will not be as active this year, but some of the bigger names that the Vikings could sign include C Matt Birk, former Ravens C/G Jason Brown, and now Steelers WR Nate Washington.
According to Access Viking, Washington reportedly wants around $7 million guaranteed, and the Vikings are not the only potential buyer for Washington. Washington would help Berrian stretch the field in 2009 if he were acquired by Minnesota.
Washington is ranked 18th on Pat Kirwan’s NFL.com list for top available free agents, and would be a valuable addition to the Vikings’ roster. Washington was near the top of the league last year getting a solid 15 plus yards per catch, and he totaled 631 yards as Pittsburgh’s third option at wide receiver.
While many people would like to see the Vikings go after TJ Houshmanzadeh, he will likely cost too much money for the front office. If Washington is signed, the Vikings could potentially move to a more open playbook in 2009, as they could have a deep threat every play, and Peterson could be able to run around more without seeing eight or nine guys in the box.
The next few days have the potential to be disappointing and surprising. It will be a fun weekend to be a Vikings’ fan.
