Arsenal Transfers: Why Ryo Miyaichi to Wigan Loan Deal Is a Good Move

Max TowleJun 1, 2018

In his brief spell at Bolton last season, Arsenal's Ryo Miyaichi showed glimpses of raw genius, going a long way to proving Arsene Wenger justified in bringing him to England.

With the flying winger now set to join Wigan on a season-long loan deal, he will further his footballing education at a club that will only benefit from his presence (via Daily Mail).

With Charles N'Zogbia long gone, Hugo Rodallega now departed and Victor Moses probably on his bike, Roberto Martinez's team is becoming seriously bereft of attacking playmakers.

Miyaichi should walk into the team and on to the right flank with Jean Beausejour on the left and either Conor Sammon or Franco Di Santo up front.

Now whilst that doesn't exactly sound like the makings of an attack capable of keeping a team out of the bottom three, Miyaichi will benefit hugely from a season's worth of regular football, even if he ends up fighting a losing battle.

Martinez likes to deploy a more continental 4-5-1 formation as well, which would be a good fit for a future Gunner.

Unlike several Premier League teams, Wigan refrain from playing a rigid, spoiler type of football. There will be plenty of space to operate and opportunities to run at back-tracking defenders—something the Japanese International relishes.

Manchester United's Tom Cleverley benefited hugely from his loan spell a couple of seasons ago, and I'd be shocked if Miyaichi didn't come away a better player as well.

As for Arsenal, the loss of a wide player certainly wont affect them a great deal.

Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will fight for position on the right, whilst Gervinho and either Lukas Podolski or Santi Cazorla—depending on how Wenger wants to utilise the duo—will contend for the left-sided role.

There is far too much attacking depth at the club for Miyaichi to get any meaningful minutes if he stayed.

In a year's time perhaps there may be room for Miyaichi, especially if he returns having impressed at Wigan.

And even if he suffers the pain of relegation once again, the benefits of the experience will far outweigh the disappointment.
