While the Dodgers proved to be the most frequent buyers at the end of the trade deadline with the acquisition of Hanley Ramirez, Shane Victorino and Joe Blanton, they still sit one game out of first place in the NL West.
As the wild-card race pits the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Atlanta Braves as the front-runners with the St. Louis Cardinals not far behind, winning the division has been of a paramount concern for the Dodgers as the only certain route to a postseason.
But recently, the Dodgers have faltered in offensive production, scoring only seven runs in a series loss to one of the worst pitching teams in the majors, the Colorado Rockies. In the first two games alone, the Dodgers only managed to put one run on the scoreboard with a slim total of nine hits.
After starting the season on an offensive tear that landed the Dodgers in first place and at one point, with the best record in baseball, the loss of Matt Kemp to injury took a toll on the squad. The month of June proved to be the downfall of the team offensively, as the Dodgers fell behind the San Francisco Giants in the division standings.
With Kemp’s return and the introduction of Ramirez and Victorino to the lineup, the Dodgers had hoped that their offensive woes would end. Unfortunately, this has not been the case.
The Rockies series was simply a reminder of the obvious fact that the Dodgers are struggling to put runs on the scoreboard. The reality of this is daunting as the season comes to a close.
If the Dodgers want to make a run at the playoffs, they will need to provide their strong pitching with the necessary run support to win games.
Consistency at this aspect of their game will make the Dodgers a World Series contender. The pitching has been flawless for the team. With ESPN reporting the Dodgers attempted to acquire Cliff Lee, it shows they are committed to pitching.
Don’t get me wrong, the Dodgers have the necessary offensive weapons to turn this around. The potential for greatness is there. The Dodgers just need to start swinging the bats and they will be a force to be reckoned with.
