2012 Women's Olympic Gymnastic Team: Still the Favorite to Win Team Gold

Chris StephensJun 7, 2018

With the women's qualifications now complete, I think it's safe to say that the U.S. women are the favorites to win the team gold.

Although there was a little disappointment for defending world all-around champion Jordyn Wieber in the sense that she didn't make the individual all-around final, she still has nothing to be ashamed about.

Aly Raisman and Gabrielle Douglas just had a better qualification.

But, Wieber should still be happy with the fact that the U.S. has three strong gymnasts that should help propel them to the team title.

In qualifications, the U.S. totaled 181.863, while Russia (180.429) was second, China (176.637) third and Romania (176.264) fourth.

After that, no team really has a chance at the team title as Great Britain was in fifth, six points behind Romania.

In an article I wrote earlier this week, I was told there's too much of an emphasis put on the U.S. and not enough on other world teams.

While I was wrong in my article that stated Wieber was a lock to win the all-around title, the comments section went a little further saying gymnastics articles on this site are "too U.S. centric."

Now, I know there are other great individuals in the world and good teams, I think the U.S. made a true statement in qualifications.

If the U.S. can duplicate three of the top four all-around scores in the finals, they will be at a significant advantage.

All four teams ironically showed weakness on the floor, while the Chinese also struggled on the vault and the Romanians struggled on the uneven bars.

As far as Russia, both were close to even in three events.

Where the U.S. had the biggest difference was in the vault, where the lowest score for the U.S. was 15.800 and the highest score for Russia was 15.633.

I guess we'll see what happens come Tuesday during the team final. Anything can happen.
