Florida Football Recruiting: Odds 5-Star CB Sticks with Gators Commitment

Jake MartinJul 27, 2012

The Florida Gators secondary class just went from solid to one of the best in the nation.

ESPN reported Thursday that 5-star cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III decided that he would play his college football in The Swamp and committed to Florida. This is obviously a huge pickup because ESPN has Hargreaves at No. 4 in the ESPN 150, and Rivals has him listed as the No. 9 best prospect in the 2013 class.

So as you can imagine, Gator fans are thrilled with Hargreaves' choice, and Hargreaves seems to be equally excited. Hargreaves took to Twitter following his commitment.

But as we've seen so many times in the past, a recruit can change his mind in a split second and make a switch. Alabama fans could tell you that better than anyone as recent 5-star linebacker Rueben Foster decommitted and gave his verbal to in-state rival, Auburn.

However, Hargreaves is unlikely to switch. Hargreaves knows that he has not only a great chance to start immediately at Florida, but he has the opportunity to be a part of a solid secondary class.

Hargreaves is a coach's son, and scouts rave about his football I.Q. Combine that with one of the best defensive minds in the game, Will Muschamp, and Hargreaves knows that he has a chance to be something special at Florida. That, along with his 5'11", 185-pound frame and natural abilities, could make him a freshman sensation and an immediate impact player.

Potentially joining Hargreaves at Florida in the defensive backfield for years to come will be three 4-star notable commits. The Gators already have verbals from cornerback Tre' Bell, safety Keanu Neal and safety Nick Washington.

If it's anything the 2011 LSU Tigers taught us, it's that a solid secondary class can do wonders for a football team. Eric Reid, Tyrann Mathieu and Tharold Simon all came to LSU together, and they're the main reason why LSU was picked to win the SEC next year at the 2012 SEC Media Days.

If all four of these commits keep their verbal with Florida, the Gators could boast one of the best defensive backfields in the SEC for years to come. Judging how scouts praise his intellect, Hargreaves should be smart enough to realize that.
