Arsenal Transfer News: Gunners Must Do Everything They Can to Secure Nick Powell

Eric BallJun 5, 2012

The Arsenal Gunners have a player on their radar that can be a major factor for years to come and must do everything in their power to secure his rights.

Attacker Nick Powell is on the market, and there are multiple teams dying to have the 18-year-old on their squad.

Previously, it was just Arsenal and Manchester United that were going to duke it out in a bidding war. Now, Liverpool head honcho Brendan Rodgers has made it clear they will be throwing their name into the hat as well, according to The Mirror.

According to the report, the budding star has been allowed to speak with United chief Sir Alex Ferguson once his bid was accepted by Powell’s club, which comes after he brushed off the initial approach by Arsenal.

But the Gunners aren’t out of it yet and now is not the time to be cheap.

The Brit has played with Crewe Alexandra his entire tenure as a pro, which began back in 2010. This season he scored 15 goals and seven assists in 37 appearances. Powell racked up 108 shots with 32 coming on goal.  He drew 92 fouls this season, which tells you how creative and agile he can be with possession of the ball.

Sure, he has only played in League Two, but Powell has shown the talent to hold his own against bigger players, and he already owns the speed to be an effective player at the next level.

Remember, this kid is 18 and will only be getting better in the next couple of years as his body continues to develop and he learns the finer points of the game. The Gunners need more help around the box and Powell could be a long-term solution to a current problem.

That doesn’t mean he doesn’t have his own demands as well, according to Alan Nixon of The Mirror:

"

Powell will also have a say on his move - he wants to play first-team football and will want that chance either at his new club or by being sent out on loan for additional experience.

"

Arsene Wenger has to approach the offseason with an eye on the future. While putting more depth alongside RVP is something he needs to successfully do this summer, the No. 1 goal is getting long-term value for a player that may look expensive right now, but could be a steal down the line as he continues to mature.

Throw the young kid on the field now and watch him mature before our eyes.

It will certainly be a risky move to get into a bidding war with teams like Man U and Liverpool, but it’s time to roll the dice and ensure Arsenal will be a Premiere team for years to come.
