Kentucky Derby 2012: Ranking Best Traditions at 'Fastest Two Minutes in Sports'

Timothy RappJun 5, 2018

Maybe you know what a furlong is, and maybe you don't. Maybe the word "trifecta" means something to you, and maybe it doesn't.

Maybe you like horse racing, and maybe it simply isn't your thing.

But I think we can all agree on something—few events have as many recognizable and classic traditions as the Kentucky Derby.

But which are the best? Or at the very least, which are my favorites?

Sound the horns, and let's find out.

4. Derby Trophy and the Garland of Roses

I'm a sucker for a classic trophy—nothing is better than the Stanley Cup—and the Derby Trophy has been around since 1924, keeping the same design through the years.

That's cool.

And who could forget about the Garland of Roses? Here's a bit of background on one of the most famous floral arrangements in the world:

"

Each year, a garland of more than 400 red roses is sewn into a green satin backing with the seal of the Commonwealth on one end and the Twin Spires and number of the race’s current renewal on the other. Each garland is also adorned with a "crown" of roses, green fern and ribbon. The "crown," a single rose pointing upward in the center of the garland, symbolizes the struggle and heart necessary to reach the Derby Winner’s Circle.

"

Pretty cool stuff.

3. "My Old Kentucky Home"

An event is always a bit more special when it has its own dedicated anthem.

At the Derby, that anthem is the singing of "My Old Kentucky Home."

2. Giant Hats

I'm no fan of high fashion, believe me—a pair of shorts and a sweatshirt, and I'm happy. Dressing up is a chore, not a great time.

But I can't help but love the ginormous hats the ladies wear at the Kentucky Derby. They're so gaudy, so garish that I can't help but love and loathe them simultaneously.

One thing is for certain—I can't look away. To me, they're a reminder that classicism still exists, and an excuse to laugh in the direction of the people who will go to ridiculous lengths to flaunt that fact.

1. Mint Juleps and the Infield

First things first—mint juleps are delicious, and even if you don't like horse racing, a few mint juleps and you'll get excited over just about anything.

And therein lies the appeal of the Infield, where the biggest party of the sports year occurs during the race. The celebrities and the prim and proper, hat-wearing crowd can have the grandstands—the Infield is where the derby truly shines.

Put me with the people, give me a mint julep and let's toast the call to the post. The Infield is a reminder that all of us can enjoy these majestic beasts as they gallop down a track with remarkable grace, power and speed.

You don't need a fancy hat for that.

Hit me up on Twitter—my tweets make moves like Bill Belichick.
