Vontaze Burfict: Cincinnati Bengals Reportedly Signing Troubled ASU LB

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

Seldom has a player destroyed their draft stock from the end of the season to the draft as impressively as Arizona State's Vontaze Burfict.

The inside linebacker was once a fixture in the first round of mock drafts, but when the real draft rolled around, he did not hear is name called in any round.

This has left him free to sign with any team that will sign him, and apparently that is the Cincinnati Bengals

A reporter for The State Press, the Arizona State student newspaper, Master Tesfatsion, tweeted out the news.

"

Breaking: Undrafted free agent #ASU LB Vontaze Burfict heading to the Cincinnati Bengals #NFL. More to come.

— Master Tesfatsion (@MasterTes) April 29, 2012"

If Burfict can perform anywhere near the level that once had him projected as one of the first LBs off the board, he will be able to make this team.

The Bengals did not draft another LB, and they could use the depth behind MLB Rey Maualuga. However, that is a giant question mark.

Burfict has always been dogged by his bad decision-making on the field. He accumulated way too many penalties for anger-induced penalties. Still, it is his performance after the season that has destroyed him.

Many were put off by his attitude at the combine, where he reportedly failed a drug test. He also committed the gravest sin of all for a would be draftee: He was awful in his workouts.

Tony Pauline of Sports Illustrated tweeted just how awful those workouts were.

"

Word on Vontaze Burfict; not good in position drills (i'm watering that down)...as one scout told me "i actually felt bad for him"

— Tony Pauline (@TonyPauline) March 16, 2012"

So the Bengals will bring in this enigmatic player with no risk. If he is terrible, or has a bad attitude, they simply cut him, and it didn't cost them a draft pick to get him.
