Arsenal Transfer Rumours: Arsene Wenger Should Move for Gylfi Sigurdsson
Arsene Wenger should sign Swansea City loan star Gylfi Sigurdsson. The mercurial Icelandic attacking midfielder can play a key role in restoring flair and fluidity to Arsenal's play.
Sigurdsson has been in fine form since joining Swansea on loan from Bundesliga outfit 1899 Hoffenheim. The former Reading standout could operate on the left flank for the Gunners.
Sigurdsson has the inclinations of a central playmaker and offers the kind of intelligent movement from wide areas that makes Wenger's footballing philosophy successful. He is technically gifted with a natural eye for goal.
The 22-year-old regularly makes clever and well-timed runs from the flank and is a classy and composed finisher. He possesses the assured touch and creative quality Arsenal have lacked in wide areas at times this season.
The loss of cultured midfield trio Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri and Jack Wilshere forced Arsenal into a more direct style of play this campaign. This brand of football suited the straight-line speed offered by the likes of Theo Walcott and Gervinho.
Yet, Arsenal's revival since their poor run to begin 2012 has been aided by including more of a natural ball playing schemer on the left side. Both Yossi Benayoun and Aaron Ramsey have performed this role and it has improved the flow of the Gunners' passing and possession.
Walcott has felt less pressure to provide balance by matching the width provided by a player on the opposite flank and has moved closer to Robin van Persie. This has created a more traditional team structure, reminiscent of the kind of hybrid 4-4-2 Wenger enjoyed so much early success with.
Sigurdsson has the attributes and talent to be a permanent option for this vital "false 11" position. It seems Wenger has certainly taken notice.
The Daily Mirror recently reported that Wenger is an admirer and has even gone as far as to sound out Reading manager Brian McDermott about Sigurdsson's ability. However, Sky Sports has suggested that Hoffenheim manager Markus Babbel is keen to give Sigurdsson another chance in Germany.
Wenger should quickly make a move to tempt Sigurdsson to North London. He has the experience of the English game Arsenal should be looking for in their summer signings, with the basis of a strong team already in place.
Sigurdsson can help return Arsenal to the kind of intricate, quick, one-touch passing that the club has become famous for under Wenger.
