Andy Pettitte Looks Strong in Spring Training Debut for New York Yankees

Mike MoraitisJun 7, 2018

In his first start since the ALDS of October 2010, Andy Pettitte took the mound in a game situation for the New York Yankees and didn't miss a beat.

He certainly didn't look like a guy who hasn't played since 2010.

Pettitte completed the one inning he was assigned when he entered the game in the sixth.

In that one inning of work, Pettitte held the Mets scoreless and allowed one hit. He got a little help from his catcher when Russell Martin threw out a base runner trying to steal after a leadoff single.

The other two outs came off an infield fly and a weak groundout. Even the hit he allowed was a weak chopper through the infield.

His control was good and even though he ran a 3-2 count, Pettitte was able to throw a strike when he needed to. The movement on his pitches also looked like vintage Andy.

Freddy Garcia started the game, but had to be pulled before he could finish the fifth inning. Garcia is thought to be the most likely candidate to be replaced by Pettitte when he returns to the big leagues.

For many pitchers, it takes time to readjust to pitching after such a long layoff, which Pettitte has certainly had. However, for Andy, it's like riding a bike.

I'm not ready to crown Pettitte ready for 2012 and primed to have a great season just yet, but his first appearance of the spring was a right step in that direction.

Putting my Yankee fan hat on, it gave me goosebumps to see Pettitte back on the mound for New York and his solid outing will only help build the anticipation of his return for the Yankee faithful.

One of the Yanks' current starters' days are numbered, but who will it be?

Stay tuned to find out!
