Jose Mourinho: 5 Things He Would Bring to Manchester City

Vince SiuJun 7, 2018

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho denied Friday that he has already reached an agreement to join Manchester City this summer, as originally suggested by journal Mundo Deportivo (via ESPNsoccernet).

The Mourinho-City rumors come hot on the heels of Manchester United legend Bryan Robson’s claims that the Portuguese coach should replace Sir Alex Ferguson in the Old Trafford hot-seat once the United legend retires.

For the time being, Mourinho seems to be staying put at the Santiago Bernabeu.

But what if—what if—he does end up heading to the blue side of Manchester?

Let’s take a look at five things Jose Mourinho would bring to Manchester City—and feel free to have your say in the comments below.

Short-Term Success

1 of 5

The thing about Jose Mourinho is that he backs up his “Special One” moniker by bringing success to every team he’s managed.

Look at the phenomenal impacts he’s made at Porto, Chelsea, Internazionale and now at Real Madrid.

He hasn’t been just great managerial appointments for all those clubs—he’s helped rewrite their club histories. (His path to the Spanish footballing pantheon is somewhat obstructed by Pep Guardiola’s brilliant Barcelona side, but Real Madrid might just secure the double this season too.)

And that’s why every top club in the world would consider him a dream acquisition—because he can repay his wages with the silverware.

World-Class Players

It’s not like Manchester City don’t have enough world-class stars. Think David Silva, Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero to begin with.

But it’s that Mourinho’s arrival would herald an altogether new era for player transfers into the Etihad Stadium.

Start with the Cristiano Ronaldo rumors—and City are probably the one club who could afford both of their wage packets—and then consider all the stars, young and old, who are being linked with summer transfers to City, and you have a clear picture of the “project” that so many players speak of when they arrive at City.

Mourinho’s reputation as a winner would be a massive attraction—and his presence at City would speak volumes about the club’s ambitions.

Top-Notch Man Management

3 of 5

To manage the very best players, you have to be a man manager of the highest caliber.

Mourinho is just that.

Chelsea’s players remain fiercely loyal to him, while Wesley Sneijder was probably speaking for a sizeable contingent of former players when he said he’d be willing to die for Mourinho.

Consider the problems that Andre Villas-Boas, Mourinho’s successor and protégé, had in managing Chelsea’s dressing room, that Rafa Benitez had in following his footsteps at the San Siro, and we realize that these jobs are, in fact, some of the hardest in all of football.

Except Mourinho takes it all in his stride and makes it look easy.

No-Nonsense Approach

4 of 5

Married to his man management abilities is his no-nonsense approach to winning and to player behavior.

So Mourinho’s arrival at the Etihad might spell trouble for the eccentric and erratic Mario Balotelli, who, for all his obvious talent, fell on the wrong side of his former Inter coach when they were both in Italy.

Or for Carlos Tevez, whose self-imposed exile has attracted all sorts of headlines for City this season.

Mourinho wouldn’t tolerate this kind of behavior from his players.

But then again, in his presence, they might not even think about it.

The Start of a City Dynasty

5 of 5

So Jose Mourinho’s signing would herald a new era for Manchester City.

It would send signals to the footballing world that City mean business and are here to stay.

In typical Mourinho fashion, he might just stay a few seasons and work his magic, bringing unprecedented levels of success to the Citizens, and leave on a high in pursuit of another club to transform or bring to the next level.

And he’d leave behind a City, whose brand and players would be known all over the world.

The problem is, he might leave such a lasting impact that the City job, just as it has for the Chelsea and Inter jobs, will become an impossible task.

But that’s a problem for later.
