New York Giants: Tom Coughlin to Get Well-Deserved Contract Extension Soon

Doug RushMar 27, 2012

For those fans who were looking for Tom Coughlin to retire from the New York Giants, it's not happening anytime soon.

According to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post, Giants owner John Mara told Hubbuch that an extension for the Giants' head coach is in the works and likely will be completed within the next month to six weeks:

"

John Mara just told me the Giants expect to complete Tom Coughlin's contract extension in the next month to 6 weeks.

This would be Coughlin's second contract extension that he's signed with the team.

The first one was right after Super Bowl XLII, when the Giants beat the Patriots, and Mara rewarded Coughlin with a four-year deal worth about $21 million.

He received a one-year extension on it, which expires after the 2012 season, but since the Giants again defeated the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI in February, Mara is set to reward the Giants' head coach again.

And for Coughlin, it's a contract that is well-earned and deserved.

He'll be 66 by the time the 2012 season kicks off, but he has proved to be one of the best current coaches in the NFL.

With the Giants since 2004, Coughlin is 128-74 in the regular season and 8-3 in the postseason with two Super Bowl championships.

Coughlin has not had the easiest tenure with the Giants, as a lot of people have called for the team to fire him in the past—especially last season when things didn't look good.

Sure, I was screaming for Bill Cowher to be New York's next head coach if Coughlin got axed.

But, when things were tough and it didn't look good for the Giants, Coughlin never lost his composure nor his will to win. He kept the Giants focused and motivated every single week.

The Giants really turned it around on Christmas Eve, when they defeated the Jets, 29-14, and earned themselves a chance to win the NFC East title against the Cowboys. With everyone watching on national television, the Giants embarrassed the Cowboys, 31-14, to win the division and rode their momentum into the playoffs.

New York then knocked off the Atlanta Falcons, defending champion Green Bay PackersSan Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots en route to the Super Bowl.

Winning the first Super Bowl four years ago saved Coughlin's job in New York.

Winning the second Super Bowl last month not only earned Coughlin a prestigious place in New York and NFL history, but it also earned him job security.

Even if the Giants somehow have a 7-9 season in 2012, Coughlin won't ever have to worry about getting fired because it's not happening. Mara isn't going to fire the coach who brought two championships to the franchise.

I can easily see Coughlin's extension being a four- or five-year deal worth $25 million.

After the Super Bowl, he was adamant about not retiring and wanted to keep coaching. Nobody would have blamed him if he decided to retire and leave the NFL a winner, but Coughlin is coaching for the love of the sport and his profession—that's what makes him not only a special coach, but also a legendary figure whom true Giants fans appreciate and cherish.

Coughlin has earned every penny of the money New York has paid him since 2004, and he'll continue to earn every single penny of the next contract he signs in the coming weeks.
