Joba Chamberlain: Chamberlain Has Surgery on Dislocated Ankle

Kenny DeJohnJun 7, 2018

Joba Chamberlain suffered an "open dislocation" while jumping on a trampoline-type object with his son, tweets Jack Curry of the YES Network.

While playing with his son on Thursday, Chamberlain rolled his ankle and dislocated it. He was taken to the hospital and had surgery to fix the damage.

According to Curry's tweets, Brian Cashman called it a significant injury.

It's likely that Chamberlain will spend several days in the hospital, which is a huge setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Already expected to miss 9-12 months, Chamberlain may not be back until after the All-Star break.

Curry asked Cashman if he felt that the injury was career threatening, to which he responded: "I'd like to say no. My heart and my gut tell me no."

Whew.

Chamberlain was progressing extremely well from his arm surgery, and it's a shame that we may not be seeing him until August, or even later.

He figured to be a midseason acquisition of sorts, giving manager Joe Girardi a fresh arm when he came back this season. Now, there's no telling if we'll ever even see him at full strength in 2012.

The fact that he received emergency surgery and will be staying in the hospital for several days shows the severity of the injury.

It's hard to not feel bad for the big right-hander, and hopefully he can make a speedy recovery—for his sake, and for the Yankees'.
