SEC Football: Urban Meyer and Lane Kiffin Weigh in on Conference Speed
It's one of those college football debates that never ends.
Are players in the SEC really faster than those in other parts of the country?
History, BCS championships and head-to-head matchups demonstrate that they are, and now former SEC coaches are weighing-in on the subject.
In an interview with Michael Carvell of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Lane Kiffin and Urban Meyer both agreed that SEC speed is not a myth, and it's particularly important in the front seven.
Kiffin told the AJC:
""Every week in the SEC, you’re usually dealing with a matchup issue somewhere up front. Out here [in the Pac 12] you don’t have as many dominant front seven, and specifically defensive linemen."
"
Tennessee fans will hate to hear it, but Kiffin is speaking the truth.
Alabama will have linebackers littered all over the NFL following the upcoming Draft, several of whom have played major roles in Alabama's national title seasons of 2009 and 2011.
Auburn rode a defensive line that went eight-deep all the way to a crystal football in 2010, and LSU and Florida have boasted front sevens that rival some NFL teams during their national title seasons.
SEC speed is not a myth, it's a fact. Wide receivers may run 4.4 40-yard dashes, but in the SEC, so do the linebackers. That's what sets the conference apart from the rest of college football.
