Barcelona started the match brightly, pressuring the Bayer players at every given opportunity.

25th minute—Messi does remarkably well to stay onside as Xavi sends an inch-perfect pass to the Argentine, who chips the ball past helpless Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

42nd minute—Messi gets his second goal of the night just before half-time. Mascherano sends the ball to Iniesta, who then plays it for Messi. This time, Messi evades three challenges before finishing the action with ease.

49th minute—Yet again it is Messi who scores. The Argentine completes his eighth hat-trick of the season with a delightful lob.

55th minute—Cristian Tello grabs his first Champions League goal in his debut only seconds after entering the match. At this point it became obvious that Barcelona would humiliate their rivals.

58th minute—Messi gets his fourth goal of the night. Leno makes a nuisance of himself by sending the ball to onrushing Messi, who once again finishes expertly.

62nd minute—Tello scores to put Barcelona up 6-0. A decent effort from the youngster, but Leno once again embarrasses himself.

84th minute— Messi scores, again. This time the Argentine sends a curling effort to the back of the net from 20 yards out. Absolutely fantastic from Messi. His fifth goal of the night.

90th minute—Bayer Leverkusen score a consolation goal. A sublime curling effort from Bellarabi finds the net. Can't help but think that Barcelona could have avoided this goal.

Barcelona have scored 84 goals in 21 matches at Camp Nou this season—that's four goals per match.

Messi has now equaled his last season's tally of 12 goals in UEFA Champions League.
