Valerio Pennicino/Getty Images has reported that Arsene Wenger is considering making a shock move for classy Italian veteran forward Alessandro Del Piero. The rather bizarre-sounding rumour has also been picked up by

This is one of the strangest transfer rumours involving Arsenal, but the move could actually have a lot of merit. Del Piero's contract with Juventus will come to an end this summer and the Turin giants are not set to offer him fresh terms.

The 37-year-old is certainly in the twilight of his career, but Del Piero still possesses the intelligence and flair to be an asset for the Gunners. Apparently, Wenger is keen to add another experienced frontman to the Arsenal ranks, following the success of Thierry Henry's winter loan spell this season.

Not only did Henry have an extremely positive impact on Arsenal's young squad, he also contributed vital goals that could prove vital to where the Gunners finish the campaign.

Del Piero's savvy and keen creative instincts could produce a similar effect. It would also be interesting to see what one of Italy's most technically gifted players could contribute in the Premier League.

Arsenal have several youngsters such as Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Ryo Miyaichi all set to play prominent roles in the near future. Adding a seasoned part-time contributor like Del Piero to the mix could produce the right blend of youth and experience to spark a title challenge next term.

With the futures of lacklustre backup strikers Marouane Chamakh and Ju-Young Park in doubt, Del Piero would be a smart short-term pickup on a free transfer.
