Andrew Luck vs Robert Griffin III: Which QB Made the Stronger Case at Combine?
The expected top two selections in the 2012 NFL Draft, Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III, both had strong showings at the combine.
That said, let's breakdown each quarterback's performances and see who made a stronger case.
Andrew Luck
For his size, 6'4", 235 pounds, Andrew Luck had excellent numbers. He ran a 4.67 40-yard dash, 4.28 20-yard shuttle, and had a vertical jump of 36 inches and a broad jump of 10'4".
You can't ask for much more from a guy Luck's size and it only further proved how great of an athlete he is. Obviously this does go overlooked though, because Luck is such an intelligent and quick-witted player, his tangible physical abilities go under the radar.
That in mind, he's arguably the smartest quarterback to enter the draft since Peyton Manning and knows how to read defenses before the snap quite well.
Whether its calling an audible, making a hot-read or dissecting a defense's coverage, the play happens in Luck's mind before the snap. And, given his intangibles as a leader, motivator, preparedness and work ethic, it's going to be difficult for RG3 to catch him.
Robert Griffin III
Despite Andrew Luck's performance, Robert Griffin III was arguably just as impressive. The man ran a 4.41 40-yard dash, hit 39 inches on his vertical jump and 10 feet on his broad jump.
There's no doubt that RG3 is an elite athlete and he's basically the same type of player that Luck is. Which means that Griffin has all the intangibles as a leader and has proven the ability to carry his team through thick and thin.
Griffin is just as deadly accurate as Luck, more mobile, can read defenses better than given credit for, and has as strong of an arm. The only difference is Luck has taken more snaps from under center.
As for the combine, RG3 didn't participate in as many drills but the 2011 season is enough evidence to see how well Griffin can produce. He has arguably just as high of a football IQ as Luck and is a true pocket-passer that happens to be supremely athletic.
Stronger Case: Andrew Luck
The stronger case goes to Andrew Luck as not only did he perform in more workouts but proved how truly great of an athlete he is.
We already knew how elite RG3 was, he proved that throughout his collegiate career. Luck however, was never viewed as an overly impressive athlete because of his size, but that was laid to rest on Saturday.
Lest we forget, all of Luck's numbers are eerily similar to those of Cam Newton who won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 2011. Getting back to Luck and Griffin, neither threw at the combine but both proved their value as athletes.
By slimmest of all possible margins Andrew Luck is considered the better prospect, however, we're basically just splitting hairs.
